PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — A pair of Dartmouth golfers finished among the top 20 at the Big 5 Invitational, held at the Plymouth Country Club, as the Big Green men completed the 21-team tournament in a tie for 12th at 37-over par with a 597. Furman University took the team title back to South Carolina with a 14-over 574, eight strokes ahead of second-place St. John's, while the Paladins' Matthew Broome won medalist honors at seven-under par. No other golfer in the tournament broke par.
Junior Peter Williamson (Hanover, N.H.) posted a solid four-over 74 in the second and final round to finish in a tie for fifth out of 111 golfers at two-over par. The day began well for Williamson with a birdie on the first hole to move to three-under for the tournament, but a bogey on the next hole and a double-bogey on the fourth dropped him back to even par. He recovered to par the next seven holes before back-to-back bogeys on 12 and 13. After one more bogey on 16, Williamson got a stroke back with a birdie on 17, then parred the final hole to complete his round.
Also finishing among the top 20 was sophomore James Pleat (Nashua, N.H.), who matched Williamson with a 74 on Sunday to end the tournament at six-over par to tie for 19th. He bogeyed four holes on the front nine, but birdied three on the back, including the last two holes.
Junior Teddy Overton (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) posted a six-over 76 each day to tie for 54th place, while senior Davis Mullany (Great Barrington, Mass.) tied for 89th at 17-over par. Sophomore Owen Lynch (Rumford, R.I.) improved eight strokes in the second round and was 22-over.
Dartmouth will conclude its fall season next weekend at the New England Invitational at Shelter Harbor, R.I.
