Women's Tennis Registers Five Semifinalists at NTC Invite

NEW YORK, N.Y. - On day two of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center Invitational, the Dartmouth women's tennis team had several competitors advance in their respective flights. The Big Green had five different players compete in the semifinals, including; Georgiana Smyser (Houston, Texas) in the D flight, Ryan Reichel (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) in the C flight, Christina Danosi (New Albany, Ohio) in the G flight Melissa Matsuoka (Newport Beach, Calif.) in the C flight and Sabrina Stewart (London, England) in the F flight.

Senior tri-captain Reichel upset the No. 3 seed from Yale en route to the C flight semis, while first-year Stewart, making her Dartmouth tennis debut, upset the No. 1 seed from North Carolina State in the F flight singles. The Big Green also had doubles success as Jeri Reichel (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) and Danosi reached the C flight doubles final. The duo was scheduled to compete in the finals on Monday, Oct. 11, but had to withdraw because of academic commitments.

The Big Green next competes at the ITA Regionals, which starts on Oct. 22.

USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center Women's College Invitational

C Flight: Ryan Reichel beat Kim Szokol Yale 4-6, 6-3, 10-6.
Lost to Maxine Thomas Brown 6-1, 6-1.

-Melissa Matsuoka beat Alex Lehman Harvard 6-2, 6-2.
Lost to Tania Illova NC State 7-6, 6-0.

D Flight:
-Rachel Decker-Sadowski lost to Annie Sullivan (3) Yale 6-0, 7-5.
Rachel Decker-Sadowski def. Cate Stewart Brown 6-4, 0-6, 10-2.

-Georgie Smyser def. Brooke Pletcher, Charleston Southern University 6-2, 6-2.
Had to default due to injury vs. Katherine Attwell, Boston College.

F Flight:
-Sabrina Stewart def. Ashley Miller (1), NC State 3-6, 7-6 (1), 10-4.
Sabrina Stewart lost to Marina Bykovskaya Binghamton University 6-1, 6-0.

G Flight:
Christina Danosi def. Ksenia Mikhaylova, St. John's University, 7-5, 6-2.
Christina Danosi lost to Elizabeth Kaufman, Cornell, 7-5, 6-2.

Jeri Reichel def. Jennifer Fridman, Binghamton University, 1-6, 6-0, 10-4.
Jeri Reichel lost to Emma Whitfield, Penn 7-5, 7-6(5).

H Flight:
Valeriya Tatisheva lost to Ina Kauppila, Boston College 6-1, 6-2.
Valeriya Tatisheva def. Victoria Pirrello, Fairfield University 6-0, 6-2.

B Doubles:
Georgie Smyser-Rachel Decker-Sadowski lost to Sinzy Chis-Shannon Comolli, Cornell, 8-3.
Smyser-Decker-Sadowski finished 5th in their flight.

C Doubles:

Melissa Matsuoka-Sabrina Stewart def. Ariel Caldwell- Cate Stewart, Brown, 8-6.
Matsuoka-Stewart finished 5th in their flight.

C Doubles:
