HANOVER, N.H. — Dartmouth baseball head coach Bob Whalen today announced dates for two scrimmages to be played this fall. This Sunday, Oct. 10, the Big Green will play host to a Canadian team from Quebec with the first pitch slated for noon. The following Sunday, Dartmouth will travel to the University of Massachusetts and will play the Minutemen starting at noon as well.
Dartmouth has won the Ivy League each of the past two years to advance to an NCAA Regional. Six positional starters return to the diamond for the 2011 season, four of whom earned All-Ivy status including the league's co-Rookie of the Year and a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American, catcher Chris O'Dowd. Two time All-Ivy selection Joe Sclafani, a junior shortstop, is back once again as the catalyst of the offense and defense, while senior Jason Brooks — the Big Green's home run (7) and RBI (48) leader in 2010 — returns at first base.
On the mound, Dartmouth features a pair of junior right-handed pitchers in Cole Sulser (8-0, 3.70 ERA, Ivy-best 60 strikeouts in 2010) and Kyle Hendricks (4-6, 7.49, 54 K), along with sophomore southpaw Kyle Hunter (2-0, 3.48 ERA in 62.0 innings) to anchor the staff. The Ivy League's all-time saves leader (24), senior Ryan Smith, has one more season to extend his record closing out games.
