HANOVER, N.H. — In a match up of ranked teams on Tuesday, November 16, the ninth-ranked Dartmouth women's hockey team bested 10th-ranked Providence, 3-2, at Thompson Arena. Three different players scored in the victory to improve the Big Green to 6-1-0 overall and are 5-1-0 in the ECAC. The Friars fell to 8-4-1 overall.
With the score tied, 2-2, at the start of the third period, each team put on the pressure, trying to score the deciding goal. Senior Amanda Trunzo (Andover, Minn.) was up for the challenge 5:27 into the third. The forward received the puck at the blueline and skated down the left side with sophomore Camille Dumais (Beaconsfield, Que.) flanking her on the right. The defense shifted toward Dumais and Trunzo took the opportunity to fire a shot over the goaltender's right shoulder. The puck quickly went in and out of the net, and was initially signaled as a goal. After the referee had a discussion with the goal judge, the other officials and both coaches the goal stood as called.
It marked Trunzo's fifth goal of the season and Dumais and sophomore Sally Komarek (Minneapolis, Minn.) earned assists on the score. The goal proved to be the difference maker with the Big Green withstanding a barrage of shots and a late penalty.
Providence scored the first goal of the contest on a power play 10:17 into the first period. Abby Gauthier scored the goal after a couple quick passes from her teammates. Dartmouth tied the contest on the seventh goal of the year by sophomore Sasha Nanji (Markham, Ont.). Nanji scored off a rebound from an Ali Winkel (Espanola, Ont.) shot. The Big Green took a 2-1 lead 2:19 into the second period off the stick of Kelly Foley (Boston, Mass.). The Friars tied the game five minutes later on a shorthanded goal after quickly countering the Big Green's power play offense.
Freshman Lindsay Holdcroft (Pittsburgh, Pa.) earned her fourth victory in net this year. She made a career-high 26 saves, including 11 in the first period. Dartmouth committed four penalties and Providence had seven.
The Big Green return to conference play on Friday, November 19, when they travel to Harvard for a 7 p.m. contest. The two teams play again on Saturday, November 20, at Thompson Arena.
