CAMBRIDGE, MASS. —The ninth-ranked Dartmouth women's hockey team's late-game rally wasn't enough, losing at Harvard on Friday, 5-3. The Big Green scored two goals in the final period, before an empty net goal by the Crimson in the final minute ended the game. Dartmouth falls to 6-2-0 overall and 5-2-0 in the ECAC. Harvard improves to 3-2-2 overall and 3-2-2 in the conference.
The Big Green were behind 4-1 six minutes into the final period and looked completely out of the contest. The squad made a game of it with two power play goals in the last 13 minutes. Sophomore Sasha Nanji (Markham, Ont.) scored her eighth goal of the year 7:31 into the third. Junior Jenna Hobeika (Alpine, N.J.) assisted on the goal. It marked the fourth straight game Nanji has scored a goal. The Dartmouth offense continued to attack and with 2:33 remaining in the game, it cut the lead to one. Junior Geneva Kliman (Toronto, Ont.) scored the power play goal on assists from Hobeika and Nanji. It was Kliman's first goal of the season and only the second in her career.
After the Big Green pulled their goaltender, the Crimson scored their last goal with three seconds left in the game. Katharine Chute scored the empty net goal to seal the victory. Harvard controlled the first period scoring the first goal. Marissa Gedman netted the goal 7:42 into the period on assists from Ashley Wheeler and Kalley Armstrong. Dartmouth tied the game two minutes into the second period on Hobeika's first goal of the season. The forward finished the contest with three points. Harvard scored the final two goals of the second off the sticks of Liza Ryabkina and Elizabeth Parker.
For the first time this season, Dartmouth was outshot in a game, 25-23. Sophomore Whitney Woodcox (Oshawa, Ont.) took the loss for the team, making 20 saves. The Big Green committed four penalties to Harvard's seven. All three of Dartmouth's goal came off the power play.
The two teams meet again at Thompson Arena on Saturday, November 20, at 4 p.m.
