It marked the second straight game in which Dartmouth (8-6-1, 2-3 Ivy) trailed at halftime and did not score its first goal until after the 70th minute. Junior Lucky Mkosana (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe) tied things up in the 80th minute and senior Daniel Keat (Welington, New Zealand) scored the winner just 30 seconds later.
Dartmouth outshot New Hampshire (7-5-5), 17-6, and took four corner kicks while UNH had none.
UNH goalkeeper Chris Devine made 10 saves to keep his team in the game while senior Lyman Missimer (The Woodlands, Texas) made two saves for Dartmouth.
New Hampshire took a first-half lead in the 28th minute of play when freshman Robert Palumbo made a bold move. Palumbo found just inches of room from his defender about 30 yards out and fired a rocket to the upper left past Missimer to go up 1-0.
After keeping their lead heading into halftime, the Wildcats kept Dartmouth at bay for much of the second half in large part due to the play of Devine.
The Big Green kept pushing offensively and it finally paid off in the 80th minute when Mkosana stepped up to take a free kick. He coolly placed his arcing shot over a six-man UNH wall and out of the reach of Devine to tie the game at 1-1.
The rhythm of the game and UNH's defensive effort suggested that the contest would be headed to overtime as the Wildcats had done 11 times already this season.
But just as he has throughout his career, Keat came up big at a critical moment for his team. Just 30 seconds after Mkosana's goal, the senior converted in traffic in the box to put one past Devine off a great cross from senior Andrew Olsen (Norwell, Mass.). Keat gave the Big Green a 2-1 lead that it would not relinquish.
The Wildcats pushed for the tying goal late and had a long possession in the final minute, but Dartmouth's defense held tight for the win.
Dartmouth heads back to Ivy League play this Saturday, Nov. 6 at Cornell.
