PRINCETON, N.J. - The Dartmouth men's lacrosse team failed to score in the first half for the second straight game and sixth-ranked Princeton made the Big Green pay in a 16-2 loss for Dartmouth.
Dartmouth (3-6, 1-3 Ivy) got goals from senior captain Ari Sussman (New Haven, Conn.) and junior Joshua Etzion (Boca Raton, Fla.) with assists going to senior captain Towny Swiggett (Huntington, N.Y.) and junior Rhett Miller (Dallas, Texas). Sophomore netminder Fergus Campbell (New Canaan, Conn.) got the start and made seven saves in 27 minutes of action, while senior Michael Novosel (Somers, N.Y.) and freshman Ryan Alexander (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) earned time in the second half.
Princeton (9-2, 4-0 Ivy) remained undefeated in league play with five goals and two assists from Jack McBride for seven points and three from rookie Mike Chanenchuk, while Rob Engelke added four points with a game-high three assist. Chanenchuk also recorded two helpers for a toal of five points on the day. Tyler Fiorito got the win with seven saves in 47 minutes of action.
The first half was dominated by the Tigers as they shutout the Big Green and entered the locker room with an 11-0 lead. McBride was the aggressor for Princeton with four of his five tallies coming in the first 30 minutes, while Chanenchuk netted two goals. The Tigers had six different players score in the opening half and Princeton outshot Dartmouth 25-10 in the half and the Big Green could only manage two faceoff wins in 13 chances.
Dartmouth finally got on the board in the third quarter with 13:32 remaining to make it 11-1. Etzion added the second of the game for the Big Green on a man-up situation for his fourth on the season with the extra man, which leads the team.
The Tigers, however, did not take their foot off the gas pedal as they tallied the final five goals of the game, including two from Forest Sonnenfeldt. Princeton continues to lead the Ivy League with the 16-2 win and Dartmouth falls to 1-3, which seriously hurts its chances in making the Ivy Tournament.
Overall, the Tigers outshot the Big Green by a 41-22 margin and dominated in ground balls at 41-20. Dartmouth won six faceoffs, while Princeton came away with possession 16 times. The two teams combined for 41 turnovers with the Tigers leading the way with 21.
The Big Green will be back in action for its first midweek game in a couple of weeks with a visit to Vermont on Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. in Burlington.
