SPRINGFIELD, N.J. — Both senior Dave Putney (Unionville, Conn.) and sophomore Peter Williamson (Hanover, N.H.) shot a three-over 73 for Dartmouth on the first day of the Ivy League Men's Golf Championships held at Baltusrol Golf Club on the lower course, finishing the day tied for third and just one stroke off the pace. As a team, the Big Green are eight strokes behind Harvard after the first of three rounds.
Harvard's Tony Grillo and Penn's Scott Williams each carded a two-over 72 to lead the 40-player field, and three of the five Crimson golfers are among the top 10 to help them shoot a 297 (+17). Yale is in second place with a 302 (+22), while Penn is tied with Dartmouth for third place with a 305 (+25).
Williams, the defending Ivy champion, birdied the second, seventh and 13th holes while bogeying six others to account for his score. Putney, on the other hand, finished the turn at even par with two birdies and two bogeys, and was still even through 14 holes before bogeying 15 and taking a double bogey on 16. He righted the ship, however, finishing with two pars for his 73.
Also competing for the Big Green were junior co-captain Davis Mullany (Great Barrington, Mass.) with a 79 (+9), and sophomore Teddy Overton (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) and freshman James Pleat (Nashua, N.H.) with identical 80s (+10). Both Pleat and Overton did finish on a high note, however, scoring birdies on the 18th hole.
Overton will be the first to tee off for Dartmouth in the second round tomorrow afternoon at 12:20 p.m.
