SMITHFIELD, RI - After averaging over 16 goals a game in the its last two games, the Dartmouth men's lacrosse team was contained by the Bryant defense as the Big Green fell to the Bulldogs, 7-5, in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday afternoon.
Dartmouth (5-7) loses out on its chance at a winning record with only one game remaining. Sophomore Kip Dooley (Minneapolis, Minn.) led the Big Green with a pair of goals, while senior long-stick Casey Hingtgen (Carlsbad, Calif.) was in on the scoring from the defensive end. Junior Rhett Miller (Dallas, Texas) and freshman Chris Costabile (Sykesville, Md.) also tallied goals. Sophomore backstop Fergus Campbell (New Canaan, Conn.) did his part to keep Dartmouth in the game with 12 saves and reached double-digits for the fifth time this season. Campbell dropped to 3-4 on the season.
Bryant (10-5) was coming off an upset win over No. 11 Yale last week and carried the momentum into this game. Matt Larson scored back-to-back goals to give the Bulldogs its first lead, which was one they did not give up. Bryant had five other players score goals and faceoff specialist Evan Roberts tallied a goal and an assist for two points. He and Hingtgen battled at the X all game and each won eight faceoffs. JK Poirer also collected two points with a goal and an assist. In net, Jameson Love made 11 saves to earn the victory and gave Dartmouth its second-lowest scoring output this season.
In a slow and uneventful first quarter that only saw one goal, Dartmouth took an early 1-0 on Costabile's 19th of the season and has now scored in three-straight games. The goal came unassisted with 6:22 left in the first quarter.
Bryant evened the score at 1-1 at the 12:40 mark of the second quarter. Poirer got the goal for the Bulldogs for his sixth of the season with the assist going to Robert Stufano. It didn't take long for the Big Green to regain the lead as Hingtgen picked up the faceoff ground ball and charged through the Bryant defense for his third of the year and third in the last three games to make it 2-1, 15 seconds after the Bulldogs tied the game. Two minutes later, Miller added to his goal total with his 13th of the year to increase the lead to 3-1.
After a timeout, Bryant stormed back with two goals in the final 21 seconds. Gary Crowley netted the first coming unassisted to make it 3-2, then Peter McMahon scored to tie the game at 3-3 with the assist going to Evan Roberts, who won the faceoff and found McMahon for the score. Dartmouth won five of the eight faceoffs in the half, but the final one of the half hurt the Big Green going into the locker room.
The two-goal lead disappeared at halftime and Bryant got its first lead of the game with 11:23 left in the third quarter with a score from Larson with the assist going to Max Weisenberg. He added his second of the game to make it 5-3 with 6:37 left and Poirer earned his second point of the afternoon with the assist.
Dooley stopped the Bryant four-goal run with an unassisted goal with three minutes left in the third. For the midfielder, it was his 10th of the season. The Bulldogs answered right back as Roberts won the faceoff and scored 13 seconds later. It was the second time, Roberts won the faceoff and created a scoring opportunity for the Bulldogs. Dooley cut the lead back to one for the second time in the half with an extra-man goal for his second of the night with the assist going to senior Josh Gillam (Peterborough, Ont.).
With 7:16 remaining in the game, Bryant took advantage of a Dartmouth offside miscue that gave the Bulldogs a man-up situation and Travis Harrington netted the extra man score to put the margin back up to two goals at 7-5. Both teams were shutout in the seven minutes. Dartmouth had an opportunity to get back in the game with a man-up situation for a minute with four minutes left in the contest, but couldn't capitalize and Bryant came away with a 7-5 win.
The Bulldogs held a 38-26 shot advantage and each team failed on four clears on the day. Bryant scored once on three of its man-up situations, while Dartmouth had the lone extra man goal in two opportunities. The Big Green hit just below its season average for turnovers, but Dartmouth had some costly miscues that led to Bulldog scores. The count was 18-14 in the turnover department.
The Big Green will be back in action in one of its most important games in recent memory on Saturday. Dartmouth travels to 18th-ranked Brown for a 1 p.m. start with a chance to reach the inaugural Ivy League Tournament.
