HANOVER, NH - After a stunning win over Cornell, the Dartmouth men's lacrosse team will hope to build on its success as Yale comes to Hanover for an Ivy League tilt on Saturday afternoon.
STUNNING A NATIONAL POWER
The Dartmouth men's lacrosse team had one of its biggest wins in the 84-year history of the program last Saturday in a stunning defeat of sixth-ranked Cornell by an 8-6 score at the 2010 New England Lacrosse Classic at Gillette Stadium. Sophomore goaltender Fergus Campbell pushed aside a career-high 23 shots and senior captain Ari Sussman netted four goals in the win, which was Dartmouth's first over a ranked team since the 2008 upset of No. 10 Princeton.
LUCKY 13
For the first time in 13 years, the Big Green came out on top when it faced Cornell. The last win over the Big Red came on April 12, 1997 in a 12-8 win in Hanover. The six goals surrendered by the Big Green was the lowest against Cornell since 1996 and if the Big Red hadn't scored the two goals in the last nine seconds, the four goals would have been the least Cornell had scored against Dartmouth since 1964.
GOALTENDER SHINES
Campbell entered Saturday's game against Cornell, fifth in the conference in saves per game at 7.5 and now is first at 10.6 after posting a career-high 23 stops, the most since Mike Gault had 28 stops against Penn on April 7, 2001 in a 7-4 loss. Campbell came out ready to play and posted 12 stops in the first 30 minutes, with six in each quarter and held Cornell to only one goal.
MORE WEEKLY AWARDS
For the second time this season a Dartmouth goaltender was named Ivy League Player of the Week. Campbell was given the honor this week, while senior Michael Novosel earned the honor on March 1. Campbell also earned New England Player of the Week honors, as well as Inside Lacrosse and Lax News awards.
KEEPING A LEAD
Dartmouth fell behind 1-0 in the second quarter, but was able to fight back to take a 3-1 halftime lead against Cornell, a lead the Big Green did not give up. Dartmouth is 3-1 with a lead going into the break and has only one loss when leading after the third quarter. On the flip side, the Big Green struggles coming from behind with no wins when trailing beyond the first quarter. Dartmouth got its first win on Saturday when it failed to score the opening goal.
SHORTEST STANDS TALL
Campbell, who stands at 5-foot-6 is the shortest starting goaltender in Division I lacrosse, but he shares his height with Canisius backup netminder Kyle Bell as the two shortest in the country. Campbell, however, was not the shortest on the field Saturday against Cornell as Jake Thompson, a Big Red attackman, stands at 5-foot-5.
HEY BUDDY YOU'RE OUTTA HERE
Dartmouth has had trouble staying out of the penalty box as the Big Green is fifth in the league with 4.86 penalties a game and led the conference earlier in the year. Once man-down, Dartmouth is second in the conference in killing percentage at 69.7% and leads the conference with two man-down goals, both coming against Harvard on March 27. The Big Green shutout Cornell on the man-down in all four opportunities.
ALMOST A CROWD RECORD
Dartmouth almost eclipsed its largest crowd record last Saturday at Gillette Stadium as 6,403 fans showed up for the doubleheader, but it missed the crowd record by 82 fans. As of 2003, when Dartmouth started keeping attendance records, the largest crowd to see a Big Green game was at Duke in 2007 with 6,485 fans. Scully-Fahey Field on the Dartmouth campus holds around 2,000 fans.
SCOUTING THE BIG GREEN
Dartmouth hosts Yale in the Big Green's first home game in about a month with a 3-4 overall record and a 1-1 mark in Ivy League play. The Big Green is averaging just 8.71 goals a game and has only reached double-digits twice this season. This is the fifth straight game against a ranked opponent for Dartmouth. The Big Green is playing the fifth game of a six-game streak of ranked opponents and sits 1-3 in those games.
Senior captain Ari Sussman is the top point man for Dartmouth. He is fourth in the Ivy League in points per game at 3.71 and is tops on the Big Green with 26 points on 15 goals and 11 helpers. His average of 1.57 assists per game is fifth in the league. Junior Josh Etzion remains second on the team with 19 points after two assists in the win over Cornell. He has 10 goals and nine assists, including three man-up goals to lead Dartmouth. Freshman Chris Costabile continues to impress during the early season with 11 goals and five assists. He posted four goals against Harvard, including two man-up and a man-down goal.
In net, sophomore Fergus Campbell has gotten the last two starts with a 1-1 record. He has recorded a 9.66 GAA and a .639 goals against average. Senior Michael Novosel has started five games for Dartmouth and has a 2-3 record. He has collected an 11.03 GAA and .500 save percentage. Freshmen Bernie Susskind and Ryan Alexander split time in the fourth quarter against Wagner on March 11. Susskind made two saves in the first action of his career. Alexander failed to make a save in his six minutes of action.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
The Bulldogs will arrive in Hanover with a 6-2 overall record, but a 1-2 mark in Ivy League play. Yale is coming off a weekend sweep of Penn and Detroit Mercy. It did not come easy against the Quakers as the Bulldogs escaped with a 16-14 win. Yale is fourth in the conference in goals per game at 11.25 and is giving up 9.62.
Brian Douglass had a career weekend for any lacrosse player with 13 goals and 14 points in the two wins. He now has 24 goals and five assists for 29 points. He leads the team with two game-winners and three man-up goals. Matt Gibson is a consistent player on the offensive end with 16 goals and 16 assists for 32 points. Brendan Gibson is third on the team with 24 points on 15 goals and nine assists. Max Rodman has been a successful faceoff man for the Bulldogs with 98 wins at the X and a 58 percent success rate. Patrick Coleman is the leading ground ball man with 29 on the season, while five others have 20-plus pick ups.
In net, Johnathan Falcone has started all eight games for Yale with a 6-2 record. He is seventh in the conference in goals against average at 9.60 and fourth in saves per contest at 8.5. Falcone has faced 240-of-251 shots put on the cage by Bulldog opponents and has played 462 minutes.
SERIES HISTORY
Dartmouth and Yale will be hooking up for the 80th time with the first meeting coming back in 1927. The Bulldogs defeated the Big Green on April 23 of that year by a score of 12-3 and have the advantage in the series with a 45-34 record. These two teams have played some close games in the last seven years with the average margin of victory a little over two goals. Dartmouth won six of those seven contests, including a 14-13 overtime win a season ago. Yale owns the longest winning streak, which is 10 (1985-1994) and came after the Big Green posted a nine-game winning streak from 1976 to 1984. This will be the first time Yale travels to Dartmouth as a ranked team.
