HANOVER, N.H. — Sophomore Kyle Hendricks (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and freshman Zack Bellenger (Grapevine, Texas) each earned a weekly Ivy League baseball award for their performances for the week ending May 2 as Hendricks was named the conference's Pitcher of the Week while Bellenger was chosen as a co-Rookie of the Week.
Hendricks came up with two crucial victories on the mound last week, beginning with an 8-4 triumph over Brown on April 27. Dartmouth entered the game tied atop the Rolfe Division standings with the Bears with just six games remaining in the league schedule. Hendricks battled through 5.2 innings at Brown's Murray Stadium while yielding four runs to earn the win and give the Big Green an advantage in the standings it would not relinquish.
But the right-hander wasn't finished as his turn in the rotation came up again on Sunday against a Harvard team that had swept Dartmouth in a doubleheader the day before in Cambridge. Hendricks did not disappoint, throwing the most dominant game of the season for the Green with a two-hit shutout of the Crimson while facing just one batter over the minimum in the seven-inning contest. He struck out four batters without a walk to improve his record to 4-4 on the season and get his second career shutout. The victory clinched the Rolfe Division title for Dartmouth, qualifying the team for the Ivy Championship Series to be played at Columbia on May 8-9.
Bellenger played an integral role in the Big Green going 4-2 in the six Ivy League games last week, batting an even .400 (8-for-20) with two doubles, two home runs, seven runs scored and five RBIs. The third baseman hit safely in each of the last five games and had a perfect day at the plate in the series finale at Brown, going 3-for-3 with a round-tripper, two walks, three runs scored, two RBIs and a sacrifice fly as Dartmouth survived a 13-10 slugfest to go up two games in the league standings. For the season, Bellenger leads the team in doubles, ranks second in homers (4) and total bases (61), and is third in hits (38) and slugging percentage (.526).
Hendricks is the third Dartmouth pitcher this year to be named the league's Pitcher of the Week, joining senior Robert Young (Cleburne, Texas) and sophomore Cole Sulser (Santa Ysabel, Calif.). This is the second award for Hendricks in his career, having earned it once last year as a freshman. Bellenger is the only Big Green freshman to earn the award this year, but has taken it home twice.
