FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Dartmouth women's volleyball team opened the 2010 season at the Sacred Heart Invitational. In the first game of the tourney, the Big Green defeated Jacksonville, 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-17) Friday afternoon at the Pitt Center.
Dartmouth came out of the gate early (1-0) and showed no ill affects of playing its first match of the season. The Big Green was stellar at the net, hitting .263 while also tallying a match-high seven blocks.
Madeline Baird (Austin, Texas) led Dartmouth with a match-high 10 kills, a .400 (10-2-20) hitting percentage and nine digs. Newcomer
Meghan Cooney (Martinez, Calif.) also added nine kills while
Kendall Houston (Austin, Texas) chipped in with 26 assists and seven digs.
In the first set, the Big Green jumped out to a 7-2 lead on an ace by
Annie Villanueva (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and then increased the lead to 11-4 with an ace by Baird. The Dolphins cut the margin to 12-7 after an attack error but the Big Green answered back with a 3-1 run to push the advantage to 15-8 on an ace by
Jessica Hartman (Woodside, Calif.). After a kill by the Dolphins and an attack error on Dartmouth made the score 15-10, the Big Green then rattled off a 3-0 run to make it 18-10 on a kill by Baird. Both teams would trade points the rest of the way until a kill by Cooney gave Dartmouth a 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second frame, JU jumped out to a 5-1 lead. The Big Green would use a 4-0 run to even the score, 7-7, on a block by
Kelsey Johnson (Carlsbad, Calif.). Both teams would go through one more tie until the Big Green went on a 3-0 run to open up an 11-8 advantage on an attack error by the Dolphins. Dartmouth increased the margin to 16-10 on a kill by Baird but the Dolphins used a 4-2 run to cut the deficit to 18-14. The two sides traded points until a kill by Baird gave the Green a 2-0 advantage heading into the break.
In the third set, the Dolphins opened with a 3-1 lead and then increased the lead to 5-2. The two exchanged points until Dartmouth used a 9-1 run to take a 14-9 advantage on a kill by Houston. The game continued to see saw until the Big Green used a 5-0 run to make it 19-12 on a block by
Elisa Scudder (Ashburn, Va.). Dartmouth could not seem to pull ahead as Jacksonville was right there to answer every point until a service error on the Dolphins ended the set and the match.
The Big Green will continue at the Sacred Heart Invitational with a 1:00 pm matchup with Binghamton before taking on Lehigh at 5:00 on Saturday, Sept. 4.
