ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Dartmouth men's squash team wrapped up its weekend trip to central New York on Sunday and the Big Green was unable to come up with a win, falling to Rochester, 7-2.
The loss drops No. 7 Dartmouth to 8-5 overall while No. 4 UR improved to 7-2.
In five spots, the Big Green went down in three. At No. 5 however, Robbie Maycock (Devonshire, Bermuda) saw his four game win streak snapped, falling to Juan Pablo Gaviria, 11-3, 8-11, 9-11, 11-6, 9-11.
At No. 8, Fletcher Pease (Cincinnati, Ohio) gave Oscar Lopez Hidalgo all he could as he took the first two sets 11-9 but it wasn't enough as Hidalgo came back to win the next three sets in dramatic fashion, 11-5, 12-10 and 14-12.
The Big Green logged two wins - at the No. 1 spot, Chris Hanson (Greenwich, Conn.) held on despite a comeback attempt by Rochester's Beni Fischer, winning in five games, 11-5, 11-5, 7-11, 1-11, 11-6. The other win for the Big Green also game in five games at the No. 9 spot, where Alex Kurth (Tenafly, N.J.) came back to beat Edwin Goncharuk, 10-12, 9-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-9.
In the exhibition match, Dartmouth's Stephen Wetherill beat Rochester's Robert McDavid, 11-5, 11-4, 11-9.
The Big Green will be back in action Feb. 5 and 6 with Ivy League matches at Princeton and Penn.
