PRINCETON, N.J. — The Dartmouth volleyball team lost a tough match at Princeton on Friday, falling to the Tigers, 3-2. The loss dropped the Big Green to 9-5 on the season and 1-2 in the Ivy League. The Tigers improved to 10-5 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the conference.
In the fifth and deciding set, Dartmouth took an early 4-3 lead on a kill by senior Madeline Baird (Austin, Texas). After a kill by Princeton's Lydia Rudnik, the Big Green would not hold a lead the rest of the contest. The Tigers pushed out to an 8-5 advantage on three consecutive kills by Cathryn Quinn. Dartmouth cut the deficit to 12-11 after a kill by senior Annie Villanueva (Santa Barbara, Calif.), but Princeton won the next three points to take the set, 15-11.
The teams alternated wins with Princeton taking the opening set 25-19 and Dartmouth rebounding with a 25-20 win in the second. Princeton took the third, 25-17, but a 5-1 start to the fourth propelled the Big Green to a 25-15 win and set up the fifth and decisive set.
Quinn led the Tigers with 22 kills and four errors for a .391 hitting percentage, while Nicole Kincade had 14 kills, two errors and a .414 percentage. She added a team-high seven blocks. Ginny Willis paced the Princeton offense with 58 assists.
Baird and Villanueva tied for the Dartmouth team lead with 15 kills each. Villanueva added five blocks and Baird had 14 digs and four blocks. Junior Alissa Santa Maria (Yorba Linda, Calif.) distributed the ball with 51 assists.
Dartmouth continues the road portion of its schedule next weekend when it travels to Yale on Friday, Oct. 7, and Brown on Saturday, Oct. 8.
