CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The Dartmouth men's lacrosse team went toe-to-toe at sixth-ranked North Carolina on Tuesday, but the Tar Heels pulled away late for a 12-7 victory. UNC scored seven of the last eight goals to earn the victory. The loss dropped the Big Green to 3-3 on the season and the Tar Heels improved to 6-2.
Dartmouth scored the first two goals of the game to take a 2-0 lead. Senior Rhett Miller (Dallas, Texas) scored the first goal and junior Drew Tunney (Greenwich, Conn.) netted the second. UNC responded with a man-up goal and then tied the game with three minutes remaining in the first quarter. The second quarter mirrored the first with the Big Green scoring two early goals and the Tar Heels coming back to tie the game before the end of the period.
The two teams came out of halftime with the game tied 4-4. North Carolina scored the first goal of the quarter to take a 5-4 lead, but Dartmouth responded with two goals to gain a 6-5 advantage with 3:29 remaining in the third. For the remaining 18:29 of play, the Tar Heels scored seven goals compared to only one by the Big Green to put the game away.
Sophomore Nikki Dysenchuk (Darien, Conn.) led Dartmouth with three points on two goals and an assist. The only other player on the team with more than one point was Miller with two goals. All total, the Big Green had five different players tally a goal. Junior Fergus Campbell (New Canaan, Conn.) made nine saves in the loss.
Dartmouth went 1-for-2 in man-up situations, while UNC went 2-for-5. It marked the fifth straight game the Big Green have recorded a man-up goal. The Tar Heels dominated in face-offs, winning 18-of-23.
The game was the fifth straight game Dartmouth played away from home, and the third straight on the road. The Big Green returns home on Saturday, March 26, for their Ivy opener against Harvard at 2 p.m.
