HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth men's lacrosse team played its Ivy opener on Saturday and earned a last-second victory over 17th-ranked Harvard.
Sophomore Nikki Dysenchuk (Darien, Conn.) scored with no time remaining to give the Big Green a 9-8 win. It was a back-and-forth contest that had eight lead changes and the largest lead of the game was two goals.
SCOUTING THE BIG GREEN
Dartmouth enters the game at seventh-ranked Cornell with a 4-3 record and is 1-0 in the Ivy League. The Big Green are 2-2 on the road this year, but have lost their last two games away from Scully-Fahey Field.
Dartmouth has seven players who have recorded double-digit points through six games. Junior co-captain Kip Dooley (Minneapolis, Minn.) leads the team with 18 points on seven goals and a team-high 11 assists. Freshman Jeff Perkins (Dallas, Texas) is second on the squad with 15 points on 12 goals and three assists. Three players are tied for third with 14 points. Senior captain Rhett Miller (Dallas, Texas) has 10 goals and four assists, junior Drew Tunney (Greenwich, Conn.) has 12 goals and two assists and Dysenchuk has eight goals and six assists. Junior John DeChiaro (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) is sixth with 12 points on four goals and seven assists, and sophomore Chris Costabile (Sykesville, Md.) has 10 points on eight goals and two assists.
In net, junior Fergus Campbell (New Canaan, Conn.) has started all seven games and has a 10.81 goals against average, a 4-3 record and a .504 save percentage. In 382:58 minutes, he has made 70 saves, including a game high 17 in two different games.
The team is averaging 10.86 goals per game, while allowing 10.71. The Big Green take 37.9 shots per game and grab 30.86 ground balls per game. Dartmouth is 7-for-20 in man-up situations for a 35.0 percent conversion rate.
EVERY-GAME SCORERS
Dooley continued his streak of scoring in every game the Big Green has played this season. He now has 18 points on seven goals and 11 assists. His season high was five points at Holy Cross on two goals and three assists.
The only other Dartmouth player to score in every game he has played in is Tunney. He sat out the first two games, but has 14 points in the five games he has played this year.
CAREER FIRST
Senior captain Adam Boardman (Brattleboro, Vt.) scored his first career goal in the third quarter of the 9-8 win over 17th-ranked Harvard on Saturday. The defenseman scored on his first career shot and brings his point total to four on a goal and three assists.
Boardman also recorded a point in two consecutive games for the first time in his career. Besides the goal against the Crimson, he also recorded an assist in the loss at North Carolina.
IVY HONOR
Campbell was named the Ivy League Player of the Week on Monday after his performances against UNC and Harvard. He made nine saves against sixth-ranked North Carolina, and followed that performance with 17 saves against the Crimson. He also helped hold Harvard to eight goals after it came into the game averaging 12.5 goals per game.
Campbell finished the week with 26 saves on a .565 save percentage. It is the second time in his career he has been named Ivy League Player of the Week, having also earned the honor on April 5, 2010.
SCOUTING THE BIG RED
Cornell enters the weekend with a 6-2 record and is 2-0 in the Ivy League. The Big Red have won three straight games with all three wins against ranked opponents. Cornell is a perfect 3-0 at home this season with wins over Hobart, Canisius and Penn.
Rob Pannell leads the team with 44 points on 21 goals and 23 assists. He is the national leader in points per game. David Lau is second on the team with 19 points on 12 goals and seven assists. Roy Lang is third with 18 points on 14 goals and four assists.
AJ Fiore has played 422:26 minutes in goal and made 55 saves with a .478 save percentage. He has an 8.52 goals against average.
SERIES HISTORY
Saturday's game will be the 61st meeting between the two schools with the Big Red leading the all-time series, 45-15. They first met in 1946 at Cornell with the Big Red winning 8-7. Cornell has won 13 of the last 14 meeting, but Dartmouth upset sixth-ranked Cornell last season at Gillette Stadium. The Big Green last won at Cornell in 1996.
