Brown Wins Atalanta Cup by Slimmest of Margins

HANOVER, N.H. - Though the race was moved up a day due to inclement weather forecasts, the Dartmouth and Brown heavyweight crews put on a show, with Brown taking the varsity race by just 0.7 seconds.

The races were moved to evening on Friday, April 22 ahead of the original scheduled time of Saturday morning due to impending snow, rain and wind in the Upper Valley.

The crews raced with a strong tail current on the Connecticut River, helping them reach the finish line in fast times.

Dartmouth and Brown duked it out in the varsity eight race as the teams battled for the Atalanta Cup but it was the Bears coming away with a finish in 5:05.7 just ahead of the Big Green in 5:06.5.

The second varsity eight race was fairly close as well, with Brown winning in a time of 5:17.1 ahead of Dartmouth in 5:21.5. The Bears also won the third varsity eight race, crossing in 5:26.7 ahead of the Big Green in 5:36.9.

Brown's novice eight won as well, crossing the line in 5:15.9 with Dartmouth second in 5:25.2. There was also a second freshman/fourth varsity exhibition race, which Brown's fourth varsity won in 5:33.1. Dartmouth finished in 6:01.7, though the time was hampered due to a late boat-stopping crab.

Dartmouth is home on the Connecticut River again next week when it hosts Wisconsin and MIT.
