"We are so excited for José to join the volleyball staff here at Dartmouth," said head volleyball coach Erin Lindsey. "Through his experience coaching a variety of levels of athletes from high school to NCAA Division I in the Pac 10, José has proved to be an exceptional teacher of the game. He shares the volleyball program and athletic department's passion for providing an exceptional academic and athletic experience to our student-athletes. We are thrilled to welcome José to the Dartmouth volleyball family."
At Arizona State, Lugo was responsible for the internal operations of the program, which included community service, travel, marketing and promotions. Also working as a volunteer assistant coach for the Sun Devils, he helped ASU beat national runner-up California in the 2010 regular season. The Sun Devils also beat eventual Final Four participant USC.
"Volleyball at Dartmouth has shown considerable growth in a short period of time," said Arizona State Head Volleyball Coach Jason Watson. "José Lugo is going to complement the hiring of Coach Lindsey, and work with her to advance their program. Our loss at Arizona State is Dartmouth's exceptional gain."
During May of 2010, Lugo was the director of operations for the USA Volleyball Women's A2 National Teams. The squads took the gold and bronze medals at the 2010 USA Open National Tournament.
From 2006-2007, he was an assistant at South Mountain Community College where he helped turn the program from a last-place finish in their conference to a fifth-place finish, increasing their win total exponentially. Prior to his arrival at SMCC, Lugo coached at Desert Mountain High School, helping to lead the team to an Arizona State 5AA Championship.
His main responsibilities at Dartmouth will include system coordination, opponent scouting, team travel and community relations. Lugo graduated from Arizona State in 2010.
