HANOVER, N.H. — In the eighth round, with the 264th pick of the 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, the Texas Rangers selected Dartmouth junior Kyle Hendricks (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.). Hendricks is the 27th Big Green player to be taken in the amateur draft since its inception in 1965, and it is the second time he has been chosen having been selected in the 39th round by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim out of high school in 2008. He is also the only Ivy League player to be taken in the first 10 rounds this year.
Hendricks, a 6-3 190-pound right-handed pitcher, was third in the Ivy League with a 2.47 ERA while going 5-3 in 62.0 innings with four complete games in his junior campaign to earn first-team All-Ivy honors. His five victories tied for the league lead while his 70 strikeouts ranked second in the conference. Opponents hit just .236 against the 6-3, 190-pound right-hander, and he walked just 11 batters (1.60 per nine innings). In one start against Army, he fanned 15 batters, the most by a Big Green pitcher in 39 years.
In 32 appearances and 30 starts over his three years at Dartmouth, Hendricks has posted a 4.87 ERA and a 15-12 record. He has thrown 186.2 innings and struck out 174, which ranks eighth all-time at the college.
Over the last eight years, Dartmouth has had nine players drafted a total of 10 times, including at least one in each of the past four drafts. Ed Lucas '04 was also taken in the eighth round, with the 235th pick by the Kansas City Royals in the 2004 draft. Hendricks is the 10th Big Green player to be chosen within the top 10 rounds; Mike Remlinger '88 was taken in the first round of the 1987 draft and Pete Broberg '72 was picked in the first round of the June secondary delayed phase back in 1971.
