HANOVER, N.H. - After missing a majority last year's cross country season with an injury, sophomore Abbey D'Agostino (Topsfield, Mass.) began the 2011 season with a first-place showing at the Dartmouth Invitational Saturday morning. The sophomore harrier helped her team to 16 points and first place on the 5K course at the Hanover Country Club as she crossed the line in 16:49.
Just missing a perfect team score, Dartmouth had four of the top five runners and 10 in the top 20.
Senior Alexi Pappas (Alameda, Calif.) was second overall Saturday, running a 17:03 to earn two points for the Big Green. Sophomore Hannah Rowe (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) was third (17:10), while fellow sophomore Katelyn Walker (Shaker Heights, Ohio) crossed the line fourth (17:23).
Following a New Hampshire runner in fifth place, sophomore Caitie Meyer (Weston, Mass.) was the fifth member of Dartmouth's team to earn points as she placed sixth overall (17:29).
Junior Kaitlyn D'Orazio (York, Maine), sophomore Bridget End (Summit, N.J.), senior Elizabeth Short (North Reading, Mass.) finished eighth (17:33), 10th (17:38) and 11th (17:40), respectively, in the race.
Dartmouth's average time of finish was 17:11, more than a half a minute faster than second-place Boston College (17:43). The Eagles' 58 points earned them second, while New Hampshire (97 points), Brown (106 points) and Middlebury (107) rounded out the remaining teams competing Saturday morning.
Dartmouth will now have nearly three weeks before racing again. The Big Green will return to the course next on Friday, Sept. 30, when they compete at the Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh.
