DALLAS, Texas- Southern Methodist scored the game-winning goal just 2:28 into overtime to take a 2-1 overtime win over the Dartmouth men's soccer team at the SMU Invitational on Friday night.
After battling to a 1-1 stalemate through regulation, the Mustangs found the game-winner off a free kick in Dartmouth territory. SMU's Juan Castillo took the free kick and the ball deflected into the Dartmouth net to give the Mustangs the win in the extra period.
Senior forward Lucky Mkosana (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe) tallied a season-high eight shots with three on goal in the loss while fifth-year senior Aaron Gaide (Avon, Conn.) scored the lone goal for the Big Green. Goalkeeper Noah Cohen (Johannesburg, South Africa) made a career-high 10 saves in his third overtime contest of the season.
The second half was a battle between the two squads with each team getting off quality shots. Mkosana had a good scoring opportunity for the Big Green in the 53rd minute of action; a shot from 10 yards out that forced Ibarra to make a save. The teams fought back-and-forth for the remainder of regulation but neither team could find the back of the net as the Big Green went to its second consecutive overtime game.
After nearly an hour weather delay to open the game, the Big Green found themselves trailing the host Mustangs, 1-0, early. SMU opened the scoring just three minutes into the game with a goal from Robbie Derschang.
The Big Green weren't down long as Gaide earned his first marker of the season in the 23rd minute. Dartmouth was able to get the ball into the SMU box and junior Kevin Dzierzawski (Oakland Township, Mich.) hit a shot that forced SMU goalkeeper, Jamie Ibarra, to make a save. That save bounced off Ibarra onto the foot of Gaide, who from 16 yards out put the ball into the right side of the net to tie the game at, 1-1.
Dartmouth returns to action on Sunday (Sept. 18) with a matchup with Tulsa to close out SMU Invitational action. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. (ET) at SMU's Wescott Field. Fans can follow with livestats at DartmouthSports.com.
