Eighth-Ranked Women's Squash Defeats 14th-Ranked Columbia, 8-1

NEW YORK, N.Y. — The eighth-ranked Dartmouth women's squash team won its first Ivy match of the season on Sunday when it defeated 14th-ranked Columbia in New York, 8-1. The victory ended a two-match losing streak and improved the Big Green to 4-5 overall and 1-4 in the Ivy League. The loss dropped the Lions to 5-8 overall and 0-5 in the conference.
Dartmouth earned sweeps in six of its nine victories and won in four games in the other two. Junior Corey Schafer (Natick, Mass.) cruised in three games over Kate Calihan in first singles, 12-10, 11-1, 11-2. At the No. 2 spot, Becky Lau (Toronto, Ontario) won, 12-10, 11-8, 11-7, over Alisha Maity. Junior Sarah Loucks (Boston, Mass.) bested Elizabeth Chu at No. 3 singles, 11-7, 12-10, 11-5.
In sixth singles, sophomore Kensy Balch (Edmonton, Alberta) defeated Dheeya Somaiya, 11-5, 11-6, 11-6. Sophomore Katherine Nimmo (Wellesley, Mass.) topped Morgan Strauss in the seventh spot, 12-10, 11-2, 11-3. The final sweep for the Big Green came at ninth singles with freshman Helena Darling (New York, N.Y.) beating Annie Tickell, 11-5, 11-4, 11-6.
Dartmouth returns to the courts on Friday, Feb. 10, when it hosts Yale and Middlebury.
