HANOVER, N.H. — In its second home game of the season, the Dartmouth men's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season to Bellarmine on March 6. The score was tied heading into the fourth quarter, but the Knights outscored the Big Green, 5-3, in the final period to claim a 12-10 victory.
Sophomore Mike Olentine (Princeton, N.J.) led the Big Green with three goals and two assists for five points. Senior Colin Delaney (Darien, Conn.), junior Chris Costabile (Sykesville, Md.) and freshman Brendan Rotanz (Westport, Conn.) all had two goals.
SCOUTING THE BIG GREEN
Dartmouth enters its North Carolina road trip with a 2-1 record and is a perfect 1-0 away from Scully-Fahey Field.
Through three games, the team has three players with double-digit points, nine who have recorded a point and four with a goal and an assist. Senior Drew Tunney (Greenwich, Conn.) leads the team in points with 12 on five goals and seven assists. Costabile and Olentine are second with 10 points. Costabile has 10 goals and Olentine has five goals and five assists. Junior Nikki Dysenchuk (Darien, Conn.) is fourth with two goals and three assists for five points. Rotanz has four points on four goals for fifth. Delaney and sophomore Patrick Resch (Flourtown, Pa.) are the only other players with multiple points. Delaney has two goals and one assist and Resch has two goals.
Senior Fergus Campbell (New Canaan, Conn.) has played all 180 minutes for Dartmouth this season. He has a 9.33 goals against average, a 2-1 record, 29 saves and a .509 save percentage.
The team is averaging 10.00 goals per game, while allowing 9.33 goals against. The Big Green take 37.7 shots per game and grab 28.33 ground balls per game. The team is 3-for-14 in man-up situations for a conversion rate of 21.4 percent.
POINT STREAK
Costabile currently has the longest point streak for Dartmouth at five games. He registered a point in each of the Big Green's final two games last season and opened this year with a point in each of the teams first three games. Most recently he had two goals in the loss vs. Bellarmine.
2012 STREAK
Dartmouth has four players who have scored a point in each game this year, and two with a goal in each game. The four players to each tally a point are Costabile, Dysenchuk, Rotanz and Olentine.
Costabile and Rotanz each have scored a goal in each contest with all 14 of their combined points coming from goals.
SIBLING RIVALRY
For the second time in two years, the Rotanz brothers will be on the same field competing for different teams. Rob Rotanz, the elder of the two brothers, is a senior midfielder for the Blue Devils. Heading into the weekend, he has 11 goals and five assists for 16 points in seven games. He is the team's third-leading scorer.
The Big Green's Brendan Rotanz has played in all three games for Dartmouth and has four goals on 10 shots.
In last year's game, also played at Duke, Rob scored two goals and Brendan took two shots.
COSTABILE'S GOALS
Through three games, Costabile has been one of the best in the nation at getting the ball past the opposing goalkeepers. The junior is currently fourth in NCAA Division I rankings in goals per game. He averages 3.33 scores a game with Colgate's Peter Baum in first at 4.33.
ASSISTS AND POINTS
Tunney may not be the one scoring the goals, but he has consistently been the one making the pass to set up the shots this season. In three games, the senior is averaging 2.33 assists per game, which ranks him ninth in the country. Steele Stanwick of Virginia leads the nation with 3.14 assists per game.
Tunney is also 16th in the nation in points per game at 4.00. Baum of Colgate is the national leader at 5.83 points per game.
CAUSING TURNOVERS
The Big Green defense is forcing the opposition to turn the ball over 10.00 times per game, which puts Dartmouth sixth in the nation. Georgetown is the country's leader, forcing 12.67 turnovers per game.
SCOUTING THE BLUE DEVILS
Duke enters Sunday's game having played five more games than the Big Green. The No. 14/15 Blue Devils are 5-3 overall after winning at home against North Carolina on Friday, 13-11. The victory is the second straight for Duke after beating Harvard at home last Monday, 11-8.
Sophomore Jordan Wolf leads the team in points with 26 on 15 goals and a team-high 11 assists. Sophomore Josh Dionne is second with a team-best 18 goals and two assists for 20 points. Senior Rob Rotanz and sophomore Christian Walsh are tied for third with 17 points. Rotanz has 12 goals and five assists and Walsh has 11 goals and six assists.
Junior Dan Wigrizer and freshman Kyle Turri have each started three games for Duke In 143:46 minutes, Wigrizer has an 8.76 goals against average, 23 saves, a .523 save percentage and a 1-2 record. In 168:03 minutes, Turri has an 8.93 goals against average, 20 saves, a .444 save percentage and a 2-1 record.
The Blue Devils average 10.75 goals per game, while allowing 9.00 goals against. The team takes 38.6 shots per game, and is 4-for-30 in man-up situations for a 13.3 percent conversion rate.
SERIES HISTORY
It will be the 15th meeting between the two schools on Sunday. Duke has won all the previous meetings and lead the series, 14-0. The teams first met on April 1, 1952 at Duke with the Blue Devils winning, 3-1. All but one of the games have been played at Duke. The only game not at Duke was a neutral site game at Uniondale, N.Y.
