STORRS, Conn. - In their season opener, the Dartmouth volleyball team fell to UConn, 0-3 in straight sets Friday night in the opening match of this weekend's UConn Classic at Gampel Pavilion. The Big Green (0-1) fell 7-25, 26-28 and 16-25 to the Huskies, who improve to 2-2 on the season.
After dropping the first set 7-25 in a shaky start, Dartmouth made a valiant effort in the second, staying neck-and-neck with Connecticut throughout the frame. Trailing 5-7, the Big Green went on a five point run to take their first lead of the match, 10-8 with sophomore Holly Harper (Austin, Texas/Williams) serving. UConn then took back the advantage, however, going up 19-13 and forcing Dartmouth to rally again. The visitors came back to force four more ties before the end of the set, but UConn pushed through for a 28-26 victory in its home opener.
Harper led all players with a match-high 21 digs, while junior Vivian Snider (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain) followed with 17. Sophomore Alex Shoenberger (Corte Madera, Calif./The Branson School) led the squad with eight kills for the match. Freshman Kayden Cook (Southlake, Texas/Carroll HS) tallied 18 assists in her collegiate debut.
For UConn, sophomore Devon Maugle posted a match-high 17 kills with 14 digs for her first double-double of the season. Senior Kelsey Maving had 17 digs, while rookie Marissa Prinzbach dished out 31 assists.
As a team, the Huskies hit .232 for the match while holding Dartmouth to a .000 attack percentage.
Dartmouth resumes play Saturday morning, facing Michigan State (10 a.m.) followed by Fairfield (5 p.m.) to round out the classic.
