Hill, N.C.
Hittin' the Road
Dartmouth heads
to Chapel Hill to square off with North Carolina in its first true road game of
the season. The game will be broadcast on ESPN 3. Earlier in the year, the Big
Green traveled to Dallas, Texas, to face Georgetown in the Patriot Cup.
Dartmouth was 2-6 outside of Hanover last season and coach Andy Towers' team is
looking to improve on that number in 2013.
Breaking the Habit
Monday's
matchup between the Tar Heels and the Big Green will be the 14th in the series
history, it also marks the fourth straight year the two have met. UNC holds the
series edge 10-3. Dartmouth won the first three games in the early 50's, but
the Tar Heels have won 10 straight against the team from the Upper Valley.
During the winning streak the average margin of victory for North Carolina is
7.60.
Last Time Out
Dartmouth scored its second straight come-from-behind victory at
home, exploding for nine goals in the second half en route to an 11-9 triumph
against Robert Morris in non-conference action. It was a balanced offensive
attack for the Green and White once again as eight players found the back of
the net. At least six players have scored in each of Dartmouth's four games
this season. It was also a day of firsts as Patrick Campbell and JP Garry found
the back of the net for the first time this year. Campbell's goal tied the game
at nine in the fourth quarter and less than 30 seconds later Garry scored the
game winner.
On the Offensive
Sophomore midfielder Adam Hull became
the first member of the Big Green to receive Ivy League recognition this season
as he was named to the honor roll last week. The Saint James, N.Y., native
leads the team in points (13) and assists (10). Seniors Chris Costabile and
Nikki Dysenchuk are tied with a team-best seven goals. After being shutout in
the season opener, Costabile has scored at least two goals in three straight
games for the Big Green.
Freshmen Firepower
The class
of 2016 has made a big impact early in the year combining to score 10 goals and
add four assists. Cam Lee has scored four goals in three games and is fifth on
the team with five points, while KC Beard is second on the team with three
assists. Jack Connolly has added three markers and Billy Heidt has netted two
tallies.
A Tale of Two Halves
Through
the first four games this season, the Big Green have been outscored, 18-12, in
the first half and outscored opponents, 31-22, in the final 30 minutes of
action. Both of Dartmouth's wins have come when trailing by at least two goals
at halftime. In both wins the Green and White scored just two goals in the
opening half.
Rank and File
Against
ranked opponents the last two seasons Dartmouth is 1-5. The lone win came
against No. 19 Colgate on Feb. 25, 2012. After the win in Hamilton, the Green
and White lost five straight to ranked opponents, while being outscored, 74-40.
Dartmouth is also 0-2 against teams that received votes in the week leading up
to their game.
Scouting the Tar Heels
North Carolina may be 3-3 through six games, but all three of its
losses have come against ranked opponents. Two of the three losses have been by
a goal. UNC hosts the Big Green for the fourth straight season. Offensively, Marcus
Holman leads the team in goals (14), assists (13) and points (27). Other
weapons on attack for the Tar Heels are Jimmy Bitter and Joey Sankey. Bitter
has 12 goals and 10 assists, while Sankey has 12 markers. In net, Kieran Burke
has made 60 saves and posted a record of 2-3.
Between the Pipes
Senior
Bernie Susskind has played well in the first four contests during the 2013
campaign making 40 saves with a save percentage of .494 and a goals-against
average of 10.00. Susskind is the only netminder on the roster who's seen
collegiate action, appearing in two games last season and making seven saves.
The Highland Beach, Fla., native made a career-high 14 saves against the Hoyas two
weeks ago in his third career start.
Youth on the Roster
Dartmouth
has 13 freshmen on the roster to begin its 2013 campaign. The newcomers make up
nearly 31% of the squad. The youth movement is a trend for the Big Green as
they also have 10 sophomores on the team. The underclassmen outnumber the
upperclassmen 23-19, and total 57.1% of their lineup.
The Help
The class
of 2016 aren't the only fresh faces on the sidelines for Dartmouth, as Towers
added two new assistants in the offseason. Tim McIntee joins the staff after
coaching at Manhattan for the past 15 years. McIntee is a 1989 graduate of LIU,
where he received national recognition as a three-time All-American. Michael
Bocklet will serve as the team's offensive coordinator. Bocklet comes to
Hanover after spending the last three seasons as an assistant coach at SUNY
Cortland. Bocklet is a 2007 graduate of
Fairfield and he earned All-New England honors twice at attack.
What's on Tap
Following
the game with the Tar Heels, the Big Green return to Hanover to open their 2013
Ivy League slate squaring off against Harvard at Scully-Fahey Field on March 23
at 1:00 p.m. Dartmouth is looking to avenge a 15-10 road loss to the Crimson a
year ago.
