HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth men's lacrosse coach Brendan Callahan has announced the addition of two assistant coaches for the 2014-15 season. Tucker Kear comes to Hanover after spending the past two years as the head coach at Bard, while former Bryant assistant coach Kevin Gould brings more than a decade of playing, professional and coaching experience to the Big Green lacrosse program.
“What I was looking for in assistant coaches were men of high character,” said Callahan, who took over as head coach of the team in August. “Men who are intelligent, who are teachers, and have excellent leadership abilities and communication skills. I feel very lucky that we found Tucker and Kevin, who both embody those qualities.”
Kear served as Bard's second head coach in program history and its first since the revival of the team after it was stripped of varsity status in 2011. He earned the Raptors' first-ever win at the 2014 season-opening game and, throughout the team's first year of games, led the squad to six victories with a roster that included just three upperclassmen and 14 freshmen.
While building a program and running practices, Kear was also in charge of purchasing supplies and equipment, organizing team travel, and establishing a lacrosse outreach program through day camps and winter leagues for local youths. On top of his coaching responsibilities, he also served as the Assistant Director of Athletics for the two years that he was with the Raptors. In 2014, the Bard men's lacrosse team was named the college's Team of the Year.
Prior to restarting the program at Bard, Kear was the assistant coach at Union, a position he held from 2007-11, until he was named the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator. Kear helped lead the Dutchmen to their first Liberty League championship and NCAA playoff bid in program history. In 2008, he was recognized as part of the Liberty League's Coaching Staff of the Year and, in 2011, was named the NCAA Division III Assistant Coach of the Year at the annual USILA National Coaches Convention.
Kear received a degree in English literature from SUNY Albany in 2006. He had Division I playing experience at UMass Amherst and Butler.
Former Bentley standout Gould joined the Bryant coaching staff last year and worked primarily with the Bulldog attack. Throughout the season, the team was ranked as high as 11th, was crowned the Northeast Conference champion and earned its first victories in NCAA Tournament play in program history. Gould was responsible for player development, breaking down game film and the organizing of a youth and high school fall tournament.
During his own playing days, Gould was a four-time All-New England selection and three-time All-Northeast-10 pick at Bentley, plus was a two-time team captain and four-year starter on attack for the Falcons. Bookending his career with major accolades — Gould was named the New England Rookie of the Year in 2007 and an All-American as a senior in 2010 — he started every game of his collegiate career and led Bentley in goals, assists and points for three of his four seasons. He would leave the Falcons ranked in the program's top-five in both points and assists.
Upon graduating from Bentley with a degree in business management, Gould was selected 39th overall by the Boston Cannons in the 2010 Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Collegiate Draft and spent three seasons with the team, winning the MLL Championship in 2011.
Before arriving at Bryant, Gould served three seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Duxbury High School, where he helped lead the Dragons to a pair of Massachusetts state titles. At Duxbury, he was responsible for guiding the team's offensive and man-up units, as well as handling scouting and player evaluation.
“I think the most important part of a program is having a staff that is on the same page philosophically and believes in our mission as coaches here,” continued Callahan. “That certainly was the case with these two from the moment they stepped on campus.”
