PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Sophomore Taylor Ng finished the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships on Wednesday afternoon with a 4-2 record. Included in that total were wins over two nationally ranked opponents.
In her final match of the tournament, she lost a hard-fought 7-6(6), 6-3 decision to Joana Vale Costa of Louisiana State in the consolation draw. Vale Costa, a sophomore from Portugal, is ranked No. 61 in the nation by the ITA.
Earlier in the tournament's pre-qualifying draw, Ng defeated Duke's Rachel Kahan — the Blue Devils' former ACC Rookie of the Year. Also falling to Ng were Kentucky's All-SEC Second-Team player Aldila Sutjiadi, who is ranked 98th by the ITA, as well as Old Dominion's Borislava Botusharova. The latter has been ranked as high as No. 407 in the WTA pro tour rankings and is the ITA's sixth-ranked freshman.
Once through to the qualifying draw, Ng fell to Stanford's Carolyn Doyle, ranked 33rd by the ITA during the preseason. In the consolation draw, Ng then defeated 80th-ranked Ana Vladutu from DePaul, before falling to Vale Costa.
“It was a great run by Taylor, who won three tough matches to make it through the pre-qualifying tournament," head coach Bob Dallis said. “She had some really solid results, and reaped the rewards of a lot of preparation and hard work. But now she has seen what it will take for her to make that jump to the next level, which will be exciting for her and her teammates to work towards."
The Big Green will be back in action as team at the Bulldog Invite in New Haven, Connecticut, starting Friday, Oct. 10.
