BRONX, N.Y. – The Dartmouth women's cross country team finished third at the 2014 NCAA Northeast Regional Friday afternoon on the 6K Van Cortlandt Park course.
The Big Green and other teams awaiting word on at-large bids will know for certain on Saturday whether or not they will move on to the nationals and the final race of the cross country season on Nov. 22 in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Iona (90) and Providence (128) were the top teams on the women's side, earning the Northeast's two automatic berths to Indiana State.
Leading the way for the Green on this day in New York City was the duo of junior Dana Giordano and Sarah B. Delozier. Their respective eighth- and ninth-place finishes helped Dartmouth to 136 team points and in great position to earn one of the at-large bids to NCAAs.
Giordano was the top Big Green and Ivy League runner, crossing the finish line in 20:24. Immediately after, Delozier finished in 20:26, giving the team from the Upper Valley two top-10 finishers, a goal set forth before the meet by head coach Courtney Jaworski.
But the strength of Dartmouth all season has been the team depth to help move up the standings. Friday was no different as junior Reid Watson was 29th overall in 21:11 and Claudia Pham took 39th in 21:19.
Rounding out the scoring was junior Sarah Bennett, running a 21:29 to take 51st overall.
The Big Green's final two runners also finished inside the top-100 individuals as Helen Schlachtenhaufen (21:41) and Alison Lanois (21:56) were 64th and 92nd, respectively.
"Today was a very deep race and the women responded with a solid effort," Jaworski said following the action. " Dana and Sarah B. raced well up front, while Reid, Claudia, Sarah, Helen and Alison were awesome and domnstrated how deep we are as a collective unit."
Dartmouth was the top Ivy League team competing in the regional as Columbia (205), Brown (209), Cornell (257), Yale (270) and Harvard (283) claimed seventh through 12th places.
Regional powers Syracuse (154) and Boston College (180) were the two programs immediately behind the Big Green and will also await word on Saturday as to whether they will head to Terre Haute next weekend.
