HANOVER, N.H. – Having been on the road for five consecutive matches, the Dartmouth volleyball team returned home to Leede Arena on Friday evening to host Cornell, its second to last opponent of the 2014 season. After winning the first set, 25-17, the Big Green dropped the final three sets, 22-25, 21-25, 21-25. Dartmouth dipped to 13-11 and 4-9 in Ivy League play, while the Big Red improved to 6-17 and 3-10 in conference action.

After trailing 3-1 in the early stages of the first set, Dartmouth turned things around to go on a 10-point rally (17-8) that was only ended when the Big Red capitalized on a Big Green error. Three consecutive Cornell points and a handful of kills allowed the opponent to get back in the set, but Dartmouth got that much closer to victory following an error on the other side of the net and a service ace by senior Alex Schoenberger (21-14). Trading points back-and-forth, freshman Sara Lindquist had a kill down the line for the deciding point.

With four ties occurring before the fifth point, Cornell's three points put the Big Red ahead, 7-4, until an error by the opponent, a kill by junior Kaira Lujan and a pair of service aces by classmate Paige Caridi put the Green and White ahead, 9-8. Five ties and multiple lead changes later, a kill by sophomore Emily Astarita and a kill by a player wearing red took Cornell to match point (24-21). A Caridi kill put the Upper Valley squad one point closer to a win, but the Big Red got there first.

A five-point run by the Big Green allowed them to put some distance between them and the Big Red (9-3), but Cornell managed to allow just one point while scoring a handful of its own to get within one (10-9). Tied at 18, the opponent scored twice off an error and a service ace to take a 20-18 lead. Following a kill by sophomore Kayden Cook, Cornell scored four unanswered points (24-19) that was countered by a Schoenberger kill and a Big Red error, but a Dartmouth error ended the set, giving Cornell its second win of the night.

Although Cornell scored the first point, two kills by Caridi and a Big Red error allowed the Green to take a lead that would last throughout the majority of the fourth set. Dartmouth went on a five-point rally made up completely of Cornell errors (14-8). With the score locked at 21, the Big red scored four unanswered points to end the set.

Caridi had a strong evening, recording a double-double with 12 kills and 17 digs and posting three of the Big Green's seven service aces. Astarita was second with 10 kills, while Cook led with 33 assists.

Dartmouth's final home match of the season will take place tomorrow at 5 p.m. when Columbia travels to Hanover. Before the match, seniors Schoenberger, Lucia Pohlman, Maura Manley and Holly Harper will be honored for their contributions to the Big Green program over the past four years.
