HANOVER, N.H. – In its first game in two weeks, the Dartmouth women's hockey team fell to No. 5/6 Boston University, 4-2, at Thompson Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The Big Green, who had not played on home ice in almost a month, dipped to 4-3-0, while the Terriers improved to 10-3-2.
“We knew how much pressure they would be throwing at us, so we were prepared for that,” head coach Mark Hudak said. “We played an okay game, but there may have been a bit of post-exam rust. BU is a very good team. Overall, I'm not happy about losing, but I'm not upset about the way we played.”
Junior Laura Stacey and sophomore Eleni Tebano led the home team with two points apiece; Stacey assisted on the first goal before netting one of her own, while Tebano wracked up two helpers. Freshman Hailey Noronha was an ever-present threat, taking five shots in the first period alone, two of which were blocked and one was saved.
The first few minutes of play were quiet, yet scrappy. Stacey took the first two shots of the game, both of which had to be saved by the Terriers' Victorian Hanson. Just 5:36 in, Marie-Philip Poulin broke the short-lived stalemate, simultaneously shooting the puck into the left of the cage while tripping over Big Green netminder Robyn Chemago, who went to block the initial shot and fell to the right.
Less than five minutes later, it was Ribeirinha-Braga who was able to slip the puck past Chemago, taking the shot directly outside the net. Leading by two, the Terriers returned to the ice to score their third at 11:19 in the second period, courtesy of Lefort. Dartmouth was able to keep Boston University away from its net for the remainder of the period.
Just over 60 ticks into the final stanza, Poulin was back in action, tallying her third point with the Terriers' fourth straight goal, this one with a man-up advantage following a Green penalty from the previous period. Trailing by four, junior Lindsey Allen put the Upper Valley squad on the board with 17:33 remaining on the clock, scoring her team-leading seventh goal of the season with the help of Stacey and Tebano.
With less than three minutes left in the game, Stacey netted Dartmouth's second marker of the day, pocketing the puck in the left side of the net. Tebano recorded her second helper of the day, while senior Morgan Illikainen had the other assist.
Between the pipes, both sophomore Robyn Chemago and Hanson totaled 21 saves. The Terriers just narrowly outshot the Green, 51-50. Boston University had 26 shots on goal, while Dartmouth took 20.
The Green and White have a busy week coming up; they will face Ivy League rival Harvard at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 2 in Cambridge before returning home to host Quinnipiac and Princeton on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 5-6.
