BURLINGTON, Vt. – After trailing by two at the end of the first, the Dartmouth women's hockey team came from behind, thanks to three goals scored in each of the final two periods, to defeat Vermont, 6-2, in Gutterson Fieldhouse on Sunday evening.
The Green, who picked up their first win since a 5-1 victory over St. Lawrence on Nov. 8, improved to 5-6-1, while the Catamounts dropped their sixth straight game and fell to 8-10-1.
"I thought we had a slow start and took a couple of bad penalties, but I was happy with how we settled down in the second period," head coach Mark Hudak said. "Once we got back to playing our game, good things happened."
Junior Lindsey Allen led the Upper Valley squad with a hat trick and an assist for four points, while junior Laura Stacey and Kennedy Ottenbreit each had a pair of points.
After spending a lot of the first period deep in Dartmouth territory, Vermont's Brittany Zuback was perfectly positioned to dump the puck in the right side of the net with six and a half minutes remaining on the clock, waiting until sophomore netminder Robyn Chemago had skated to the left before making her move. Just 21 seconds after a Dartmouth penalty gave the home team a man-up advantage, Amanda Pelkey gave Vermont a comfortable two-goal lead with her ninth tally of the season, shooting into the left of the cage at 18:26.
The exciting second period started in Vermont's favor, who set up camp in front of Dartmouth's net and fired seven consecutive shots, with half of them being saved by Chemago. The Green got control of the puck and junior Zoe Brennan fired at the net, but was thwarted by Madison Litchfield. Litchfield cleared Brennan's shot, but sent it directly to Allen, who pocketed the puck into the right corner at 3:32 to lessen Vermont's lead to one.
At 13:46, a shot by Illikainen caused Litchfield to move to the left of the net, allowing Stacey to tie the score at two with a quick flick into the back of the net with helpers going to Ottenbreit and Allen. A mere 37 seconds later, senior Karlee Odland flew down the left side of the ice and fired past Litchfield. Junior Ailish Forfar and sophomore Devon Moir earned the assists.
The Green and White were right back at it in the third stanza, scoring three times in 10 minutes, with Allen netting her second marker of the evening four minutes after returning to the ice and a minute after two Vermont players were called for penalties. Following a handful of Vermont attempts, junior Catherine Berghuis added another point to the board with her short-handed goal. The assist went to sophomore Katy Ratty, whose shot directly before had hit the pipe. With five minutes left on the clock, Allen scored her third of the evening, an unassisted marker to give her a team-leading 10 so far this season.
The Catamounts outshot the Big Green, 28-25. Chemago had 26 saves, while Litchfield stopped 19 shots. Dartmouth went 1-for-3 on the power play and held Vermont to 2-for-5.
The Big Green will take a two-week break from the ice, returning for their final game of the 2014 portion of the season, a 2 p.m. New Year's Eve battle against Northeastern in historic Matthews Arena.
