HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth men's cross country team began the 2014 season Saturday morning and wasted little time getting into a in winning mindset.
The Big Green won the Dartmouth Invitational at the Hanover Country Club with 21 team points thanks in large part to boasting the top-three finishers in the race.
Junior Curtis King led the way, taking home the individual title by finishing the 8K course in 24:25.3. Not far behind were senior Silas Talbot (2nd, 24:27.3) and freshman Pat Gregory (3rd, 24:30.0) to all but secure the team title.
“We were very happy with how things went today,” Marjorie and Herbert Chase '30 Head Coach of Men's Track & Field and Cross Country Barry Harwick '77 said. “We achieved our goals — Curtis won, we demonstrated good depth and our freshmen gained experience of competing in a collegiate meet — so I think we can look back on this and be pleased with the complete team effort.”
Junior Brian Masterson (7th, 24:40.8) and sophomore Matt Herzig (8th, 24:50.40) added to the scoring total for the Big Green as six of the race's top-10 finishers were from Dartmouth.
Just as their female counterparts had done, the Brown men's team claimed second in the standings, finishing with 46 points. After the Bears, Keene State (88), Roger Williams (107), UMass Lowell (130) and Middlebury (153) rounded out the team scoring.
This was the first win at the Dartmouth Invitational for the men since 2011 when they posted 15 points in taking the team crown.
The Big Green will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 26 at Franklin Park in the Boston College Invitational, which is set to feature some of the top teams from across the nation. Race time is set for 3:30 p.m.
