HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth Director of Athletics and Recreation Harry Sheehy announced Monday afternoon that Barry Harwick '77 has been elevated to The Marjorie and Herbert Chase '30 Director of Track and Field and Cross Country.
In this new role, Harwick will oversee all facets of both Dartmouth men's and women's track and field and cross country programs. Harwick will manage the Big Green's coaching staff, including Sandy Ford-Centonze — who will remain The Marjorie and Herbert Chase '30 Head Coach of Women's Track and Field — as well as women's cross country head coach Courtney Jaworski and assistant coaches Jeff Forino, Tim Wunderlich '09 and Scott Phelps.
“I am pleased to announce Barry's new position within the department,” Sheehy said. “Barry's commitment and dedication to the track and field and cross country programs at Dartmouth is admirable and we look forward to continued growth and development under his guidance.”
Now in his 23rd season at Dartmouth, Harwick's previous title was The Marjorie and Herbert Chase '30 Head Coach of Men's Track and Field and Cross Country, fulfilling his primary duties with the Big Green men's teams.
"Dartmouth track and cross country had one of our most successful years in the history of the program in 2013-14 with Ivy championships, school records and All Americans,” Harwick said. “I think this is the ideal time to build on that success. With my additional responsibilities as director, I look forward to moving us forward in key areas like recruiting, friends and alumni outreach, and long-range planning for the program.”
Under Harwick's guidance, the Dartmouth men's cross country program has claimed six Ivy League Heptagonal titles and advanced as a team to the NCAA Championship meet nine times. Several of his former student-athletes have gone on to professional success in the realm of athletics, including Adam Nelson '97 (2004 Olympic Gold Medalist – Shot Put) and Ben True '08 (top American in both 2011 and 2013 IAAF World Cross Country Championships).
Recently, Harwick completed his two-year term (2011-13) as the president of the US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), the sport's governing organization at the collegiate level.
The original Chase endowment was the first for any athletic program at Dartmouth and was bestowed on Harwick and Ford-Centonze in 1998.
