HANOVER, N.H. – In the first meeting between the two teams so far this season, the Dartmouth women's hockey team was defeated by No. 9/10 Cornell, 2-1, in an ECAC Hockey and Ivy League Battle in Thompson Arena on Friday evening.
The Big Red, who are now 10-6-3 and 8-2-2 in conference action, snapped the Big Green's four-game winning streak. The home team dipped to 10-8-1 and 6-6-1 in ECAC Hockey play.
Junior Laura Stacey scored Dartmouth's lone goal of the night, finding the back of the net at 13:02 in the final period following passes from sophomores Kennedy Ottenbreit and Eleni Tebano.
The Upper Valley squad had a good chance at a goal late in the first period, when a shot by junior Zoe Brennan hit the pipe. Cornell's netminder Paula Voorheis was kept on her toes throughout the entire period, having to make 15 saves.
A backhand by Jess Brown at 18:24 in the second broke the scoreless tie and gave the visitor a one-goal lead heading into the final stanza. Taylor Woods, who earned the assist, picked up the puck after intercepting a Dartmouth pass and sent it to Brown, who was positioned directly outside the net.
Cornell wasted little time finding the back of the net again, scoring its second of the night at 6:18 in the third at the hands of Sydney Smith.
At 13:02, the Big Green lessened the Big Red's lead when Stacey scored her seventh of the season with 1:21 remaining on the power play, shooting from near the blueline and evading Voorheis for the first time. The home team tried to even the score in the remaining minutes, but Voorheis managed to get in the way enough times to keep that from happening.
Dartmouth outshot Cornell, 29-25. Sophomore netminder Robyn Chemago had 20 saves in the loss, while Voorheis stopped 28 shots, including 15 in the first period alone.
The Green and White return to action on Saturday when it hosts Colgate at 4 p.m.
