WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. – The Dartmouth men's swimming and diving team returned to the pool for the second day of the Dartmouth Invitational in a big way, winning 10 events and breaking three pool records en route to taking the team title with 1,221.5 points. Connecticut College was second with 951.5 and Massachusetts was third with 779.
The Dartmouth 200-yard medley A relay, which was made up of junior James Verhagen, senior Jay Schulte, sophomore David Harmon and senior Ian Woon, started that day off by finishing first by over two seconds with a time of 1:32.90. The Big Green broke the pool record that had been held by Keene State College for almost five years.
Junior Logan Briggs was first in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:07.75, touching half a second ahead of Michael Glenn of UMass. Freshmen Zack Browne and Henry Senkfor came in third and fourth with times of 4:11.55 and 4:11.75, respectively. In the 100-yard butterfly, Harmon broke the pool record, finishing first with a 49.21and leaving over two seconds between him and the second place finisher.
Three Big Green freshmen took the top three spots in the 200-yard freestyle, with Tony Shen touching first with a 1:42.07. Misha Tovmashenko placed second in 1:42.10 and Bruno Korbar followed soon after in 1:42.71. Schulte and fellow senior Konrad Von Moltke competed in the 100-yard breaststroke, taking second and third with times of 58.68 and 58.91. To end the second session, junior James Verhagen was first in the 100-yard backstroke with a 50.71.
Over at Karl Michael Pool, sophomore Taylor Clough took the top spot on the 1-meter board with a score of 303.45. Senior Ryan Shelley was second with a 276.30 and junior Brett Gillis placed third with a 268.20. On 3-meter, it was Gillis who was victorious, finishing first with a score of 336.15. Clough was second with a 329.78 and Shelley came in third with a 305.10.
To start the second session, Browne came in first place in the 1,650-yard freestyle, touching with a 16:12.06 and leaving a gap of eight seconds between him and Alessandro Bomprezzi of UMass in second. Sophomore Joby Bernstein placed third in 16:36.66. Verhagen won his second event of the day, the 200-yard backstroke, with a 1:51.34, out touching Hao Luong of UMass by three-tenths of a second.
Woon broke the pool record in the 100-yard freestyle by one one-hundredth of a second, clocking a 45.90 to take first. Schulte was second in the 200-yard breaststroke with his time of 2:06 and, in the 200-yard butterfly, Browne placed second with a 1:55.34.
The Big Green ended the day by touching first in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:08.51. Composed of Tovmashenko, Shen, sophomore Jack Long and Woon, the A relay finished just a tenth of a second ahead of UMass.
Next Saturday, Jan. 21, Dartmouth will host the University Connecticut in Karl Michael Pool at 12 p.m.
