HANOVER, N.H. – For the second weekend in a row, the Dartmouth men's swimming and diving team ended the day with a win, defeating the University of Connecticut, 177-123, at home on Saturday afternoon.
On 1-meter, senior Ryan Shelley and junior Brett Gillis placed second and third with scores of 278.32 and 269.77, respectively. On the 3-meter diving board, sophomore Taylor Clough was second with a 320.70, Gillis was third with a score of 318.60 and Shelley came in fifth with a 287.78.
Dartmouth took the top two spots in the 200-yard medley relay, with the A relay finishing in first place with a time of 1:31.93 and the B following with a 1:36.47.
Freshmen Misha Tovmashenko and Tony Shen finished two-tenths of a second apart to take first and second in the 200-yard freestyle. Tovmashenko was first with a 1:41.60, while Shen clocked a 1:41.82 to take second. In the 200-yard butterfly, sophomore David Harmon came in second with a time of 1:54.02, but turned around to win the 100-yard butterfly in 50.52, touching a second and a half ahead of the competition.
Junior James Verhagen was victorious in both the 100 and 200-yard backstroke, finishing with a time of 50.50 in the 100 and 1:51.81 in the 200. In the 100-yard breaststroke, senior Jay Schulte came in second place in 59.73 and was followed by sophomore Timo Vaimann in third with a 1:00.11 and senior Konrad Von Moltke in fourth in 1:00.50.
Schulte led that same army of Dartmouth swimmers in the 200-yard breaststroke, winning with a time of 2:08.81. Von Moltke was second in 2:11.69 and Vaimann placed third with a 2:11.85. In the 200-yard IM, junior Aaron Athanas was victorious with his time of 1:54.44, touching a few seconds ahead of freshman Henry Senkfor, who took second with a 1:58.21.
Senior Ian Woon came in second place in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.47 and, soon after, won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 46.72. Tovmashenko was second in 46.77.
To end the day, the Dartmouth 400-yard freestyle A relay finished in first place with a time of 3:05.98. Made up of Woon, junior Daniel Whitcomb, Tovmashenko and Shen, the Big Green left almost a second between it and UConn.
Next weekend, Dartmouth will host its final dual meet of the 2014-15 season, welcoming conference rival Columbia to town for a 3 p.m. meet. Just over two weeks later, the Big Green will travel to New Jersey for the Ivy League Championships, which will take place at Princeton from Feb. 26-28.
