HANOVER, N.H. – At its final dual meet of the 2014-15 season, the Dartmouth men's swimming and diving team fell to Ivy League rival Columbia, 191-109, in Karl Michael Pool on Sunday morning.
To start things off, senior Ryan Shelley took second on the 1-meter board with a score of 298.73. Junior Brett Gillis was fourth with a 288.45 and sophomore Taylor Clough came fifth with a 244.95. Later on in the day on 3-meter, Gillis placed highest for Dartmouth, coming third with a 308.33. Clough was fourth with a 293.41 and Shelley came in fifth with a score of 284.85.
The Big Green 200-yard medley relay, which was made up of juniors James Verhagen and Aaron Athanas, sophomore David Harmon and senior Ian Woon, was second with a time of 1:32.37, touching just two-tenths of a second behind Columbia.
Junior Logan Briggs took third in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:51.34. In the 100-yard backstroke, Verhagen came in second place with a 50.54, but turned around to win the 200-yard backstroke in 1:52.87. Senior Jay Schulte took second in both the 100-yard breaststroke (58.01) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:08.08).
As they did at the last meet, freshmen Misha Tovmashenko and Tony Shen placed first and second in the 200-yard freestyle with times of 1:41.91 and 1:42.29, respectively. Classmate Zack Browne came in second place in both the 200-yard butterfly (1:54.03) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:45.61).
In the 50-yard freestyle, Woon came in second with a 21.39 and, a few events later, touched in fourth place in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.86. Placing highest for Dartmouth in the 100 free was Athanas, who was second with a 47.57, while Tovmashenko was third in 47.70. Harmon came in second place in the 100-yard butterfly with a 50.92 and sophomore Tate Ramsden was fourth place in 52.73.
To end the day, the Dartmouth 400-yard freestyle relay came in second place with a 3:08.57, touching half a second behind Columbia. Woon, junior Daniel Whitcomb, freshman Brandon Boval and Tovmashenko left almost 10 seconds between it and the third-place finisher.
The Ivy League Championship will take place from Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 26-28 at Princeton.
