BUFFALO, N.Y. – Junior Brett Gillis kicked off the 2015 NCAA Division I Zone 'A' Diving Regional Championship on Friday afternoon in the preliminary round on the 1-meter board.
Gillis, who hails from Kitchner, Ontario, finished in 23rd place with a score of 259.05, just a handful of points ahead of Boston College's Cole Malatesta. Pittsburgh's Dominic Giordano took the event with 336.00 points.
The Zone 'A' meet is one of five regional meets used to determine the NCAA championship qualifiers. The top five female and top four male divers from each event at their respective zone diving meet will be eligible to compete at the national championships. Additional place finishers in each event at each zone will be eligible based on the number of student-athletes from that zone who finished in the top 16 in that event at the previous year's NCAA championships.
The Big Green junior still has two days of competition ahead of him. Next up will be the 3-meter diving prelims, which will take place on Tuesday at 2:20 p.m. On Wednesday afternoon, he will compete on platform.
