PRINCETON, N.J. – After leading by two halfway through the second period, the Dartmouth women's hockey team tied Princeton, 2-2, inside Hobey Baker Rink on Friday evening, after the opponent scored once in each of the final two stanzas.
The Big Green are now 11-9-2 and 7-7-2 in ECAC Hockey action, while the Tigers have a mark of 10-10-2 and 8-6-1 in conference play.
Four Green and White players wrapped up the night with a point apiece: junior Laura Stacey and sophomore Eleni Tebano each scored a goal, while junior Lindsey Allen and sophomore Kennedy Ottenbreit earned the assists on the second marker.
“I thought we played a pretty good game,” head coach Mark Hudak said. “It was physical and high-speed and we certainly had our chances, but we couldn't quite find a way to finish.”
At 7:58, Stacey took advantage of a misstep by a Princeton player going in the opposite direction and picked up the puck on the far side of the blueline, firing past Kimberly Newell's padded hands and burying it into the top left of the net. The Green almost increased their lead further when a shot by Allen hit the right pipe with 1:20 remaining in the period, but the puck deflected out of danger.
A shot by the Tigers' Hilary Lloyd a minute into the second was almost the goal the home team had been searching for, sailing just inches to the right of the pipe. A few minutes later, Emily Achterkirch and Kiersten Falck had three consecutive point-blank attempts at a goal, all of which were saved by sophomore Robyn Chemago.
With less than a minute left on the power play, Tebano scored Dartmouth's second goal of the game and her second of the season at 10:03, shooting to the right of the cage following a behind-the-net pass between Allen and Ottenbreit. Princeton returned the favor at 14:55; Chemago made three quick saves, but Morgan Sly was able to slip the puck into the goal from directly outside the net to lessen Dartmouth's lead to one.
Newell racked up three saves in the first 15 seconds of the third period, setting the pace for the final 20 minutes of action. With the clock winding down, both teams took shot after shot, but were thwarted by the goalies each time. At 10:53, after trailing for the entire game, Princeton tied things up, with Kelsey Koelzer delivering the equalizing blow, effectively sending the game to overtime. With two minutes remaining, senior Morgan Illikainen almost scored after a clean pass from freshman Brooke Ahbe in front of the net, but Newell's knee pad deflected the shot.
A combined eight shots were taken in the five minute overtime period, but to no avail. With 35 seconds left on the clock, Lloyd broke past Dartmouth's defenders and fired straight at Chemago, but the puck flew to the right of the cage.
Princeton outshot Dartmouth, 45-34. Chemago ended the night with a career-high 43 saves, while Newell stopped 32.
The Big Green return to action on Saturday with a 4 p.m. game against No. 5/5 Quinnipiac.
