HAMDEN, Conn. – After a strong defensive showing in the first period left both teams scoreless, No. 5/5 Quinnipiac defeated the Dartmouth women's hockey team, 3-1, at High Point Solutions Arena on Saturday.
Freshman Brooke Ahbe scored the Green's only goal of the afternoon at 16:09, taking advantage of a deflected puck that landed directly in front of the net. She, junior Catherine Berghuis and sophomore Devon Moir, who earned assists on the goal, all ended the day with a point apiece.
The Big Green, who tied Princeton last night, dipped to 10-10-2 and 6-8-2 in ECAC Hockey play, while the Bobcats improved to 21-4-3 and 12-2-2 in conference action.
Both netminders were on point, turning away a combined 26 shots on goal in the first period and a half before one was finally able to make it into the net. At 7:40 in the second period, Quinnipiac's Nicole Kosta flicked the puck into the left side of the cage with just six seconds remaining on the power play to give the home team a 1-0 advantage.
The Bobcats' second marker of the period came at 15:48 in a similar fashion as the first, with Nicole Connery skating to the left and shooting point-blank at the net. A few seconds later, Meghan Turner sent the puck flying near the right pipe, but sophomore Robyn Chemago's padded hand punched it out of the way.
Junior Ailish Forfar started the third period with a rocket to the right, but netminder Chelsea Laden was able to get a knee in there to deflect the shot. Five minutes in, Berghuis narrowly missed the right pipe as the shot sailed wide for yet another close call. Kosta was back at it at 15:47, scoring her second of the day. Just over t20 seconds later, a shot by Berghuis was saved by Laden, but the puck bounced out of her hands and landed right in front of the net, being pocketed behind the goalie by Ahbe, who netted her third goal of the season.
Quinnipiac outshot Dartmouth, 30-17. Chemago ended the day with 27 saves, while Laden had just 16.
Next weekend, Dartmouth will host Ivy League and ECAC Hockey rivals Brown and Yale. The Green will take on the Bears at 7 p.m. on Friday before facing the Bulldogs at 4 p.m. the next day.
