HANOVER, N.H. – With regular season games winding down quickly, the Dartmouth women's hockey team opened its second to last home weekend with a 4-3 victory over Brown on Friday night. The Big Green improved to 11-10-2 and 7-8-2 in ECAC Hockey play and the Bears fell to 5-19-0 and 2-15-0 in conference action.
Senior Karlee Odland led the team with two assists, while seven different Green players ended the night with a point apiece.
"I don't think it was our best game," head coach Mark Hudak said, "but we found a way to win it."
Dartmouth opened scoring at 7:58 in the first period when a pass from a Bear sailed well in front of sophomore goalie Robyn Chemago's feet and was picked up by classmate Kennedy Ottenbreit, who passed to Samantha Zeiss. The Big Green senior faked out a Brown defender and sent the puck flying past Monica Elvin's right elbow and into the back of the net at 7:58.
At 1:31 in the middle period, senior Morgan Illikainen fired at the net, but the shot was stopped by Elvin's leg pads. While the goalie was trying to collect the loose puck, sophomore Devon Moir sent it to freshman Brooke Ahbe, who was waiting to the left of the net. Ahbe's shot bounced off Elvin's left leg, but this time, deflected into the goal. At 9:09, Dartmouth got its third of the night when sophomore Emma Korbs sent a rocket from the blueline whizzing past the goalie's head.
Trailing by three, the Bears got back in the game by scoring twice in the span of 1:16. Kaitlyn Keon scored Brown's first goal at 18:11 in the second, pushing the puck past Chemago's stick and into the right of the cage. At 19:27, immediately after Keon had taken a shot that hit off the crossbar, Sam Donovan took a diving shot from directly outside the net and pocketed the puck in the top right corner.
The home team returned to the ice for the third period aggressively, getting a two-goal lead back at 5:12. Odland and junior Laura Stacey passed the puck between them a handful of times before Stacey scored her ninth of the season. That lead, however, did not last long, as Sarah Robson took advantage of Chemago losing her step and netted a shorthanded goal at 8:13 to put the Bears within one once again. Although the visitor got close to tying things up numerous times, Dartmouth was able to see that one-goal edge through the final buzzer.
The Big Green outshot the Bears, 35-29 and, even though the home team went 1-for-5 on the power play, it held Brown to 0-for-4. Chemago amassed 26 saves, while Elvin had a total of 31.
Dartmouth returns to Thompson Arena on Saturday with a 4 p.m. game against conference rival Yale.
