HANOVER, N.H. – With the temperature dropping quickly and snow in the forecast, the Dartmouth sailing team returned to the water for three races over the weekend. The Big Green hosted the Captain Hurst Bowl and sent small groups to Yale and Salve Regina.
At the beginning of the weekend, Sailing World's College Rankings were released. Dartmouth's coed team was No. 9 (229 pts.) and the women's team was No. 8 (161 pts.).
At home on Mascoma, Dartmouth was represented by Rebecca McElvain and John Lewis in the A-Division, Patrick Floyd and Madeleine Cooney in the B-Division, and Duncan Williford and Caroline Lauer sailing in the C-Division. The Green placed third out of 18 teams with 245 points, finishing ahead of Brown in fourth with 264 and behind Yale with 232. Boston College won with 213 points.
Conditions were challenging – going from sunny to snowy in a matter of hours – but made for some good racing. The three divisions all got in 14 races and combined for 20 top-five finishes, including two firsts from the C-Division and one from A.
At the Yale Women's Interconference, Dartmouth was eighth of 18 teams with 281 points, coming in just ahead of Georgetown with 287 and three points behind Charleston with 278. Sailing in the A-Division were Sarah Williams (Emma White replaced Williams on Sunday) and Sophia Diserio, while Emily Petno and Hope Wilson were in the B-Division.
Met with big breeze and big waves, the two divisions combined for 10 top-five finishes, including two first-place finishes by the B-Division.
The Big Green moved up from fifth place on the first day of the New England Match Racing Championship to place second overall out of eight teams, finishing behind Harvard and ahead of Yale.
In sunny, windy and wavy conditions on Saturday, Charlie Lalumiere, Nate Greason and Abigail Rohman won all three races in the morning by outsmarting their competitors in the prestart. On Sunday, with Williams replacing Rohman, the squad went 2-1 against Tufts and advanced to the semifinals, where they faced Bowdoin and drew a black flag to advance to the finals. The Big Green lost to Harvard, 2-0, but qualified for nationals in the process.
Dartmouth will compete in four regattas next weekend.
