HANOVER, N.H. – Senior Brooke Van Valkenburg scored a pair of penalty-corner goals and sophomore Anna Ewasechko had a score and three assists to help the Dartmouth field hockey team to a 4-2 win against visiting Columbia Sunday afternoon at Chase AstroTurf Field.
The Big Green improve to 2-3 in Ivy League play and 6-7 overall, while the Lions drop to 2-3 in conference games and 8-6 overall. Dartmouth now owns a 13-7 edge in 20 all-time meetings with Columbia.
“I'm very proud of our ability to play a full 70 minutes at both ends of the field,” head coach Amy Fowler said. “We were effective with our defensive play in holding them to just the two goals. Making a stop on a stroke also gives us a lot of confidence as we near the end of the season.
“At the offensive end, to have multiple players score in several different ways is another confidence booster for us as we hit this key stretch run,” Fowler added. “
Junior goalkeeper Paige Duffy was instrumental in the game, making seven saves, including a penalty stroke in the final minute of the first half.
Ewasechko and junior Heather Zezzo added second-half tallies for the home team as well to earn the second Ivy victory of the season for the Big Green.
Dartmouth had a 2-1 lead at the half thanks to the seventh and eighth goals of the season, respectively, for Van Valkenburg. On both markers, Eliza Becker and Ewasechko had the helpers, setting up with the pushout and stop on the penalty corner. Becker now is now alone in second in the Ivy League with 12 assists this fall.
After Rebecca Bard pulled the Lions to within one in the 29th minute, Duffy came up huge to preserve the advantage at intermission with a save on a Christina Freibott penalty stroke bid with just 59 seconds showing on the clock.
The lead swelled with Ewasechko's third goal of the season on a great pass from senior co-captain Rebecca Hu in the 41st minute. Columbia responded in the 67th minute with Meredith Kalberer tapping in her team's second goal of the day to make it a 3-2 game.
However, Zezzo put the Green and White back up by a pair 58 seconds later with a diving score that put the ball just inside the post and finishing off a pass from Ewasechko for the fifth point of the afternoon for the latter.
In all, the Big Green held a 14-6 edge in corner plays and outshot the visitors, 19-14.
Dartmouth is back in action on Wednesday night in a non-conference road game at Holy Cross. Game time between the Big Green and Crusaders is set for 6 p.m.
