NEW HAVEN, Conn. — After weather caused the suspension of the first round of the 40th Macdonald Cup on Friday, the 13-team field was able to complete two rounds of play on Saturday with Dartmouth finishing the tournament in fifth place with a 588 (+28) on the par-70 course at the Yale University Golf Course. Junior Jeff Lang led the charge for the Big Green, finishing 12th with a 70-75—145 (+5). The third and final round has been canceled due to the conditions.
Harvard, which had four of the top five golfers (one playing as an individual), finished 12 strokes ahead of second-place Minnesota with a 568 (+8). But it was the Golden Gophers' Jon DuToit who took home medalist honors as the lone golfer to shoot under par with a 72-67—139 (-1).
At the conclusion of the first round, the Big Green found themselves in second place thanks to carding that 289. While Lang was shooting even par, senior Charles Cai and sophomore Ian Kelsey enjoyed solid round as well at two-over par. Combined with freshman John Lazor's 75, Dartmouth was just four strokes off the pace behind the Crimson.
The second round proved to be more difficult for the Green. Junior Scott Jaster led the squad with a 74 (+4) while Lang, Cai and Kesley were just one stroke behind. Kelsey and Cai finished the day tied for 19th at seven-over par, and Jaster tied for 32nd with a 150 (+10). Lazor rounded out the Dartmouth group in a tie for 40th at 153 (+13).
“We played really well, shot even par through the 12 holes on Friday before the suspension of play,” said the Bill Johnson Head Coach of Men's Golf Rich Parker. “It was a strong weekend for us, and finishing ahead of Yale and Princeton was a big plus. It's too bad we won't get to play the third round, but overall our guys did very well in tough conditions.”
The Big Green will conclude their fall schedule on Oct. 12-13 at The Connecticut Cup at Ellington Ridge, hosted by the University of Connecticut.
