HAMDEN, Conn. – The Dartmouth men's hockey team were done in by costly penalties Saturday night at the TD Bank Sports Center as No. 4 Quinnipiac earned a 6-2 ECAC Hockey win.
Sophomores Carl Hesler and Corey Kalk scored for the Big Green (2-4-0, 2-4-0 ECAC), but the unbeaten and untied Bobcats moved to 10-0-0 to start the season with the victory, matching their longest win streak in program history.
The turning point of the game came with Dartmouth trailing by just one, 3-2, late in the second period. A hitting-from-behind major penalty assessed to senior Brett Patterson resulted in a five-minute power play for the Bobcats.
Tim Clifton scored with just 28.8 seconds left in the period to send the home team into the room with a two-goal lead. Sam Anas built the advantage to three, 5-2, just 31 seconds into the third with a one-timer under the bar on Charles Grant's blocker side.
The Bobcats added an empty netter in the waning moments to seal the four-goal win.
“Penalties got us in big trouble tonight,” head coach Bob Gaudet said. “We worked really hard all night, but we were tired from killing penalties all night. There were a lot of self-inflicted wounds on our part today and that takes a lot out of some of our top-line guys who are spending a lot of time on the ice killing off penalties.
“You can't give a good team like Quinnipiac those chances all night and expect a great result for your team,” Gaudet added.
Hesler's first of the season cut the deficit to just one at 15:46 of the opening period after Scott Davidson and K.J. Tiefenwerth had put the Bobcats up a pair with goals in the previous three minutes.
Kalk's second goal in as many games cut it to one as he scored an unassisted power-play marker five minutes into the second.
The Green had an opportunity to pull even, but a shorthanded breakaway bid by Tim O'Brien was denied with an outstanding glove save from QU starting goalie Michael Garteig, firing up the student section behind him.
Grant did all he could; making 33 saves in the game, but the Bobcats' puck movement on the man-advantage (2-for-5) led to key markers. Garteig stopped 22 in earning his 10th win of the season.
Dartmouth will not be in action again until the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving when they travel to Michigan for a pair of non-conference games against the Wolverines. The break is the result of the college's exam schedule.
