MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The No. 46 Dartmouth women's tennis team completed its weekend sweep, defeating No. 70 Minnesota, 6-1, the day after a 5-2 win over Drake at the Baseline Tennis Center on Sunday.
This is the first time in over a decade that the Green have opened a season with a record of 10-0. The Gophers dipped to 5-4.
“Overall, it was a great team effort,” head coach Bob Dallis said. “We competed at a high level against a very strong team on the road and we never really let them get into the match. It was very much a team victory.”
Dartmouth won the doubles point by taking all three matches. First to finish were freshman Alexxis Kiven and junior Katherine Yau, who defeated Jessika Mozia and Julia Courter, 6-2, at No. 2, and they were followed by freshman Julia Schroeder and senior Akiko Okuda, who took down Maja Vujic and Mehvish Safdar, at No. 3 by a score of 6-4.
Sophomore Taylor Ng and freshman Kristina Mathis, who are ranked 40th in the nation, had a 7-5 defeat of Tereza Brichacova and Paula Rincon Otera at No. 1.
Schroeder quickly got Dartmouth's second point with a 6-1,6-1 victory at No. 6. After Yau lost her match at No. 2 to make the score 2-1, Mathis at No. 3 and Okuda at No. 5 won in quick succession to clinch the match for the Big Green. Ng at No. 1 and Crawford at No. 4 closed the scoring with three-set victories.
Dartmouth will host Massachusetts at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 26. This will be the last time the Big Green will play at the Boss Tennis Center until mid-April.
