PRINCETON, N.J. – Junior James Verhagen finished highest of all Dartmouth swimmers on day two of the 2015 Ivy League Championship, taking fourth place in the 100-yard backstroke with a B cut time of 47.64 to earn the team 26 points. The Big Green men's swimming and diving team is currently sitting in eighth place with 289 points.
In the 1,000-yard freestyle, freshman Bruno Korbar dropped over 30 seconds off his seedtime to take 14th in 9:14.39. Also swimming the event were sophomores David Harmon and Joby Bernstein, who were 25th and 26th with times of 9:41.31 and 9:42.46, respectively.
Junior Logan Briggs finished highest for the Big Green in the 400-yard IM in 18th, clocking a 3:57.35. Freshmen Henry Senkfor and Zack Browne touched less than a second apart with times of 4:02.49 and 4:03.22 to take 22nd and 23rd. All three Dartmouth swimmers improved on their swims from prelims.
In his second event of the evening, Harmon swam a 48.82 in the 100-yard butterfly to take 16th place, while Verhagen placed 20th in 48.63. Three freshmen represented Dartmouth in the 200-yard freestyle final, with Misha Tovmashenko coming in 18th with a time of 1:38.82, Brandon Boval taking 22nd in 1:40.15 and Tony Shen finishing soon after in 23rd with a 1:40.64.
Senior Jay Schulte, sophomore Timo Vaimann and senior Konrad Von Moltke all finished six-tenths of a second apart in the 100-yard breaststroke, with Schulte leading the way in 56.27 to take 22nd. Vaimann came in 23rd with a time of 56.82 and Von Moltke touched in 24th in 56.90.
Swimming alongside Verhagen in the 100 back were fellow juniors Aaron Athanas and Daniel Whitcomb, who took 12th and 24th with times of 48.49 and 52.15, respectively.
To wrap up the evening, Dartmouth finished in sixth place in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 6:38.19, breaking the Big Green's school record by over two seconds. Composed of Boval, Korbar, Athanas and Tovmashenko, the relay out-touched Brown by almost three seconds.
At prelims, sophomore Tate Ramsden took 30th in the 100 fly with a 50.86. In the 200 free, senior Ian Woon tied for 27th with George Schnaars of Cornell with a time of 1:40.27. Shen was 26th in the 100 back in 51.93.
The third and final day of the Ivy League Championship will start at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
