BRONX, N.Y. — The Dartmouth softball team (4-11) dropped a tough 1-0 contest to Hofstra (8-7-1) on Wednesday afternoon at Fordham's Bahoshy Complex. The second game of the doubleheader was canceled due to low temperatures in New York. The game was originally scheduled to be played Hofstra, but field conditions moved the event to Fordham.
Senior Kristen Rumley (3-8) tossed a complete game five-hitter but allowed a lone run in the fourth inning. Rumley was very economical with her pitches (77) and struck out six of the 22 batters she faced.
Rumley led the Big Green with two of the squad's six hits. Juniors Katie McEachern and Kelsey Miller, sophomore Maddie Damore and freshman Lourlin Lara also reached base with hits.
Hofstra's leadoff hitter Chloe Fitzgerald and Kim Smith paced the Pride with a pair of hits each. Erin Trippi scored home the only run of the contest with runners in scoring position in the fourth inning. The catcher sent a single through the left side that plated Rachel Simodejka.
Dartmouth struggled to get a runner past third base and had a great opportunity in the third when McEachern tripled to center field, but an infield hit by Lara kept the Big Green shortstop at the corner.
Trailing 1-0 in the sixth, Damore sent a one-out single up the middle and Rumley added her second hit of the contest, but neither could move across the base paths.
Morgan Lashley (5-1) went the distance for the Pride and allowed six hits and struck out seven Big Green batters.
Dartmouth will take on St. John's tomorrow afternoon in a single seven-inning contest. Weather has once again has halted the Big Green's chances to get games in during the New York swing. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. in Jamaica.
