LONG BEACH, Calif. – On its first day in the Golden State, the No. 23 Dartmouth women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of No. 31 Long Beach State, 5-2, on Thursday afternoon.
The Big Green, who were 18th in the nation last week (their highest-ever ranking), dipped to 11-1, while the Beach improved to 9-3.
“We played against a very focused and determined team today,” head coach Bob Dallis said. “These are the teams we need to play to continue moving forward to the next level.”
Dartmouth won the doubles point when sophomore Taylor Ng and freshman Kristina Mathis had an 8-4 defeat of Karolina Rozenberg and Laura Eales at the No. 1 position, while senior Akiko Okuda and freshman Julia Schroeder had an 8-6 win over Julie Gerard and Ella Monsey at No. 3.
The Green's lone singles' victory came at the No. 6 position, when Schroeder had a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9) win over Alex Jones. At the No. 3 singles, Mathis fell to Hayley Thompson, 6-1, in the first set before battling to a 7-5 second set. She was leading, 1-0, when the match was suspended once Long Beach had clinched the win.
Next up on Dartmouth's weeklong trip through California will be an 11 a.m. (PT) match against No. 66 Denver on Friday.
