THIS WEEKEND
The Dartmouth men's lacrosse team will hit the road for the third time in two weeks, heading to New York to face Wagner at 1 p.m. on Saturday. This is just the second time that the two teams have met, the last being on March 11, 2009, a game that the Big Green won, 18-9.
LAST TIME OUT
On a 40 degree March afternoon, Dartmouth opened its home schedule by dropping a 10-9 heartbreaker to Sacred Heart on Scully-Fahey Field on Wednesday. After Jack Connolly tied the score at nine with 23 seconds left in the fourth quarter, the Pioneers got possession of the ball and, a split second before time expired, Ian Farley scored the game-winner to give the visitors their first victory of 2015. Jack Korzelius had a big day, scoring his first collegiate goal early in the first and tacking on three more throughout the game to lead the team with four markers. After almost 10 minutes of scoreless action in the fourth quarter, Sacred Heart's Brian Masi gave the visitors the goal they were looking for, giving the Pioneers a 9-8 lead with time quickly winding down. Connolly's goal kept Dartmouth in the game, but it was Farley's last-second tally that ended it.
SCOUTING THE SEAHAWKS
Wagner opened its season with two straight losses before picking up its first victory of 2015 against UMass-Lowell on Feb. 28. Most recently, the Seahawks had a 7-3 loss to Monmouth on the road. Andrew Streilein leads the team with five goals and four assists for nine points and is tied for first among the Seahawks with six groundballs.
LAST TIME AGAINST WAGNER
The first and last time the Big Green and the Seahawks met was on March 11, 2009 on Scully-Fahey Field. Dartmouth scored 10 goals in the second quarter to defeat Wagner, 18-9. Joshua Etzion played the first half only for the home team and registered nine points on five goals and four assists. It was the most points registered by a Big Green player since Ari Sussman tallied eight back in 2007 and held until 2014 graduate Mike Olentine netted 10 goals and added an assist for 11 points, which is a Dartmouth record. Although the second quarter belonged to the Green, the final frame was all Wagner as the Seahawks outscored Dartmouth, 4-1, but the home team had enough of a lead to hang on till the final horn.
CALLAHAN & CO.
After a 2-10 campaign last season, the Dartmouth men's lacrosse team is looking to rebuild in 2015. That rebuild began last summer with the hiring of Brendan Callahan, who came to Hanover after spending the last seven years as an assistant coach and defensive coordinator at Lehigh. Callahan brought in Tucker Kear and Kevin Gould to round out the Big Green's new look on the sidelines.
LEADING THE WAY
Just two games into the season, Don Stephan is leading the team with four goals and two assists for six points, while Korzelius is close behind with four points from four goals, all of which were scored against Sacred Heart. Wiley Osborne has two goals and an assist and Cam Lee has tallied two assists, while 10 Big Green players have one point under their belts.
FRESH FACES
Making their collegiate debut this year in the Class of 2018 are Willis Bocock, Jase Davis, Cormac Dugan, Cody George, Alex Kelly, Evan Key, Jack Korzelius, Patrick Lesch, Richie Loftus, James McJunkin, Sam Runkle, Doug Strazza and Ty Vandenberg.
BETWEEN THE PIPES
Two of Dartmouth's four goaltenders from last year will be returning for the 2015 season. Junior Blair Friedensohn started all 11 games in which he appeared, stopping 116 shots while allowing 125 goals, and wrapping things up with a 12.87 goals against average and a .481 save percentage. Looking to spend more time in net this season is senior Colin Heffernan, who, at 6-foot-7, is tied for tallest player in Division I lacrosse. He adds depth and experience in the circle for the Big Green. Against Sacred Heart on Wednesday, Friedensohn saw all 60 minutes of action in net for the first time this season, making 13 saves, including a handful of key stops to keep the visitors at bay. He also led the team with seven groundballs.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Dartmouth will open Ivy League play on Saturday, March 21 with a 1 p.m. game against Harvard and will host non-conference Vermont three days later.
